These are official Mazda sketches showing the current CX-30 replacement. The name CX-20 was trademarked back in 2023 and hasn’t been used yet. However, the new model could still be called CX-30 in some markets.
The new CX-30 will be produced in Thailand and exported to various markets. Currently, the CX-30 sold in North America is produced in Mexico.
The next generation is rumored to use a new Hybrid powertrain from Mazda, unlike the new CX-50 Hybrid which uses a Toyota powertrain. The new Mazda tech will power 60% to 75% of all their models by the end of the decade. The new “in-house” developed Hybrid system will use a larger battery than the Toyota system, while not being a PHEV.
And there is also the first pure EV SUV that will come out next year in the US. And of course, it will be another SUV. Mazda seems to be moving away from regular sedans and hatchbacks for good. So far, no replacement has been planned for the Mazda 3. The current generation was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show over 6 years ago…
As for the CX-30, it is almost as old and was introduced in late 2019. It is actually getting a little bit more popular every year with sales reaching over 77,000 in the US in 2023. A new design with a Hybrid powertrain would obviously be even more popular.
So far, I have not read good reviews about the CX90 and CX-70 PHEV versions. In the US or Europe. It has mostly been described as rough and unrefined. Which is really too bad. Let’s hope Mazda can do better with their next-generation Hybrids.
