Cadillac Eldorado.

Last Updated:

Cadillac has been hard at work on two new EV sedans. These will be replacing the aging CT4 and CT5. And, according to GM design director Brian Smith, we might see one of these “soon”…

What they are not working on, at least officially, is a new 2-door Eldorado coupe. So far, the Solei Concept from last year is the closest thing to a new Eldorado. Something that, if ever produced, would be even more expensive than the $340,000 Celestiq.

A “real” new Eldorado would have to be much, much less expensive, and could most likely be based on one of the 2 new Ultium-based sedans. Since they now cover pretty much every single SUV segment known to man with the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ. They can’t really come up with something cheaper than the Optic as a luxury brand. The only new models they can come up with in the near future are sedans. Or maybe even a coupe.

So why not a cool, large, and old-fashioned coupe like an Eldorado?

Like many famous Cadillac models, the Eldorado started life in the 1950s. Back when American luxury cars were insanely large and heavy. But also the envy of car fans all around the world. These were days long before Mercedes or even BMW were popular, especially in the US. Also, these giant chariots were barely getting 10MPG.

The Eldorado started shrinking for its 10th generation in 1979, but still looked great and quite imposing. However, by 1986, the much smaller 11th generation just looked ridiculous. By then, it seems Cadillac in general was quite lost.

Cadillac was working on a new, beautiful coupe a few years ago, which ended up being a concept they only showed a few months ago. Like it, they were ashamed of it. Or maybe the opposite, it looked so good it made the CT5 sedan look even worse.

Let’s hope someone at GM pushes for a new coupe. A new Cadillac coupe…
