VW ID.Cross Concept.

I believe this is maybe the best VW design in years, besides the ID. Buzz. This is exactly what the VW brand needs. A friendly good good-looking design for an affordable car.

In keeping with the new VW strategy of naming their EVs with familiar names, they have decided to call this the ID. Cross. A very important move for the European market, where the T-Cross has been very popular for the past few years. A small SUV below the T-Roc.

It is quite small and almost a foot shorter than the VW Taos sold over here. It’s even shorter than a Nissan Kicks. And a couple of finches shorter than a Volvo EX30. The new ID. Cross is one of 4 new small affordable EVs VW will introduce by 2027. Unfortunately, most of these won’t be available in the US.

No word yet on US or North America availability. It would really be too bad if VW decides against it. But they do have a history of not selling many of their nicer models over here. And newly added tariffs on European products won’t help either.

Its main competition over here would be the Volvo EX30. Especially the base $35,000 version that is somehow still scheduled to go on sale over here later this year. But also the upcoming Kia EV3, Nissan Leaf, 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, and the future Hyundai Ioniq 3. Among many others.

What you see here is a very close preview of the production car and not a true concept. Inside, some materials will be different on the production model, but that’s about it.

A wonderful little urban EV that

  1. This (or whatever VW arrives) will have a hard time in the US against the Bolt and Leaf, which will likely command most of the $30k EV market. I will say this – for an entry level EV, dont put a glass panoroof in it. Its an expensive addition compared to just a moonroof, but also its an insurance premium double hit. Make better cars.
