2027 Mitsubishi Pajero illustration.

The classic Mitsubishi Pajero SUV is rumored to make a comeback. Soon… I think it’s a great idea, and the illustration above shows what the next generation could look like.

A few prototypes have been caught in Europe in the past few months, which started rumors of a new Pajero.

The original first generation was introduced back in 1981. With 3 more generations produced until 2021. Over the years, the Mitsubishi Pajero developed a stellar reputation as a true off-roader vehicle. It was sold in the US as the Mitsubishi Montero for many years. However, the latest generation was never available over here.

With the popularity of the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, a new Montero in the US seems like a no-brainer.

The next Pajero/Montero is sometimes rumored to be based on the current Nissan Patrol. A large, expensive body-on-frame SUV. There is also a rumor of the next-generation SUV being based on the current Outlander. It would be a more rugged-looking, more off-road-oriented version of the unibody Outlander. Something like this would also probably be a lot cheaper than anything based on the Nissan Patrol. It could also offer a Hybrid or PHEV option.

However, a unibody Mitsubishi SUV wouldn’t really be taken seriously by the tough off-roader crowd. What Mitsubishi might need is “the real thing”. They do sell a body-on-frame pickup truck in some overseas markets called the Triton. Its platform would be cheap enough to produce an affordable off-road SUV if needed. Something not as refined as the Outlander.

Something tough for the rough boys and girls of the world.

  1. If Mitsubishi moves forward, it should be build at Nissan’s assembly plant in Smyrna TN. If its built in Japan, it will be too expensive with the tariffs.
