New Mitsubishi Destinator.

The new Mitsubishi Destinator is the production version of the DST concept I mentioned a couple of days ago.

We saw a few spy shots of an all-new Mitsubishi model being tested in Europe. One that looked a lot like the DST concept. So far, it seems the new Destinator could be the same car that has been caught testing in Europe.

First, let’s make fun of the name. Which is almost ridiculous and odd. It reminds me of one of those old British TV shows from the 1970s. You know, three ones using “near has-been” American actors like Robert Vaughn, Tony Curtis, or Gene Barry. “Like ‘Pursuaders’, or ‘Adventurer”. (These would make good cheesy car names too…)

The new Mitsubishi Destinator will be officially unveiled in Indonesia next week. Which is expected to be its primary market. However, as mentioned above, it seems the new model has been tested in Europe as well. And I really think Mitsubishi could use something like this in North America. Especially if affordable.

Apparently, the prototype testing in Europe has 6 lug nuts. While the new Destinator has 5, that would probably mean different platforms.

The new Mitsubishi Destinator is also a bit smaller than it looks. At 184 inches long, it is about the same size as a Honda CR-V. And yet offers 3 rows of seats.

The powertrain is not anything special with a 1.5 1.5-liter turbo engine and CVT, and 5 driving modes. However, that is also what the Honda C-HV offers over here.

I think this could be exactly what Mitsubishi needs over here. Something with a more outdoorsy trucky design that would slot right under the $30,000 Outlander. Maybe a replacement for both the Highlander Sport and Eclipse Cross?

Why not…

  1. I have had 3 Mitsubishis Outlanders and my sister had the Sport. I would love to see a pickup truck to replace my 2001 Toyota Tacoma.

  2. We bought 2 2005 Mitsubishi Outlanders. After almost 280,000 miles on one, we traded one in for a 2020 Outlander. Both are running great. My sister recently purchased a Mitsubishi Sport when she traded in her Gallent. I would love to see Mitsubishi pickup truck to replace my 2001 Toyota Tacoma.
