Nissan Xterra will be back for 2028.

It has recently been confirmed by Nissan‘s current CEO. The 5-seater off-road-oriented Nissan Xterra will indeed return for 2028.

“We are considering the revival of the Xterra nameplate as a hybrid SUV, with a potential launch in 2028. Production is being evaluated for our Canton, Mississippi, facility. The return of Xterra would represent a strategic move to strengthen our position in the mid-size off-road SUV segment.”

The illustration above shows what the new SUV could look like. Showing something similar to what Honda has been doing for a while. Like a 5-seater Honda Passport that is mostly a shorter version of the 7-seater Pilot. While both Honda models have different designs, they do share most of their interiors. The new Nissan Xterra could end up being closely related to the Pathfinder.

However, since we are talking 2028 here, this could be related to a next-generation Pathfinder. Since the current generation came out in May 2021. It seems that by 2027 or 2028, a new generation will be welcome.

That new generation is also rumored to offer a new V6 Hybrid powertrain. Something that would of course be offered in a new Pathfinder as well.

It’s also interesting to note that around the same time, Honda is planning to offer a new V6 hybrid option for the Pilot and Passport. (Or it could be a bit later if Honda decides to introduce the new Hybrid powertrain for the next-generation Pilot). With new rumors of talks between Honda and Nissan, it could be possible that we are talking about the same V6 Hybrid unit for both brands. While merger talks are dead, there have been rumors about Nissan and Honda considering joint car and powertrain development.

A 3.0 Liter V6 hybrid powertrain that both companies are already planning g on use sounds like a perfect match.

  1. Finally another rendering I can get behind!

Alas, this looks more like an E-Terra than an Xterra. The wheels are too close to the corners, so it’d have to be on a car platform.

  2. I would hope that a V6, and/or a V6-hybrid would also be offered in the Infiniti QX60 (and upcoming QX65) instead of that 2.0L turbo-4. I feel that was a downgrade, especially for the premium brand, and with no V6-upgrade. To me, that was a poor plan, and even the updated Pathfinder, which is below the QX60, is offered with the 3.5L V6. I say the same for the new-generation Nissan Murano, very advanced from the predecessor, but the 2.0Lturbo-4 replacing the 3.5L V6 is a dealbreaker, at least for me. I have a 2015 Murano with the 3.5L V6.

  3. Does anyone remember the teaser photo released in March of this year that has six Nissan vehicles in it with the Leaf being front and center? Well, since then, with the unveiling of the Out Rogue Lander PHEV, we’ve now seen four of the six. The missing two… well I believe the one to the right of the Leaf is the next generation, Rogue. Then there’s one in the way back behind the refreshed Pathfinder…. the rumors at time pegged this as an Xterra EV. What if…. this was just the plain jane non EV Xterra the whole time?
