The Smart brand has officially jumped the shark.

Originally, decades ago, the Smart car brand was supposed to be the car equivalent of a Smart watch. That idea went under rather quickly, and Mercedes stepped in. With tons of cash.

The company became the loveable Corky Tiny 2 seater cars that were popular for many years and in many countries around the world. At one time, they even tried a sporty coupe and even a 4-door hatchback/crossover type thing. None of these was as popular as the original 2 seater.

In 2019, Mercedes decided to enter into a partnership with Chinese manufacturer Geely and kept just 50% ownership of the brand. Under Geely, there have been a couple of very interesting models for Smart. All EVs, a great idea for the brand. And all with a new version of that corky design. Even their new #5 SUV model is really cool looking, in a very Smart way. And now this….

We now have photos of the brand’s very first 4-door sedan. And it lost everything Smart was known for. It’s basically a larger, boring sedan that could have been designed by anyone for any brand in the world. Exactly what a Smart should never be.

It is also not an EV like their most recent models, but a hybrid powered by, you guessed it, a 1.5 Liter engine. Just like everyone else. And at over 193 inches long, it is the same size as a Toyota Camry!

They should be ashamed…

  1. I actually like it. I think it has enough character to be a Smart vehicle. It’s nice to see that they avoided tacking on a lot of awkwardly ugly details to try to give it more “personality”. It’s a fresh, clean design with a rather sporty looking rear. Given the popularity of sedans in China, I think it’s a good move for Smart to enter the segment.

They also made it a liftback, which should make you happy, Vince.
