Could the Next Cadillac CT5 Spawn a New Eldorado Coupe?

Of course, GM is probably not actually working on a new Cadillac Eldorado. What they are working on instead is a second generation CT5 sedan. Which could be quite similar to the current one actually. They did it before with the CT4 and the previous ATS. Some new sheet metal (not all) and a new interior. But really, wouldn’t we rather get an all-new 2 door luxury coupe, like an Eldorado?

So far, the Solei Concept from a couple of years ago,  is the closest thing to a new Eldorado. Something that would have been ever  more expensive than the $400,000 Celestiq. And the last thing Cadillac needs.

A “real” new Eldorado would have to be far less expensive, and could most likely be based on the future CT5. Since Cadillac now cover pretty much every single SUV segment known to man with the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ. It cannot really come up with something cheaper than the Optic as a luxury brand. The only new models they can come up with in the near future are sedans. Or maybe even a coupe.

So why not a cool, large, and old-fashioned coupe like an Eldorado?

Like many famous Cadillac models, the Eldorado started life in the 1950s. Back when American luxury cars were insanely large and heavy. But also the envy of car fans all around the world. These were days long before Mercedes or even BMW were popular, especially in the US. Also, these giant chariots were barely getting 10MPG.

The Eldorado started shrinking for its 10th generation in 1979, but still looked great and quite imposing. However, by 1986, the much smaller 11th generation just looked ridiculous. By then, it seems Cadillac in general was quite lost. It did make a comeback in 1992, with a more imposing side. By then the Eldorado was just an awquard looking coupe version of the Seville.

Cadillac was working on a new, beautiful coupe a few years ago, which ended up being a concept they only showed last year. Like if, they were ashamed of it. Or maybe the opposite, it looked so good it made the current CT5 sedan look even worse.

A new big retro Cadillac Eldorado would be a true return to form.

  1. I really like this.
But the tapered roof put my mind on something else. Maybe Vince could render?
Bolt could again return with it’s front end as a half-cab with convertible roof, tapered or CUV square with stowable windows. Use the same battery pack as an EREV 2500 truck, it needs to be a parts-bin effort.
