2018 VW Atlas and Tiguan: 6 year warranty!

Last Updated:

That’s right. VW has announced it will offer a 6 year warranty on the 2018 Atlas and 2018 Tiguan.

It is a complete bumper to bumper warranty for 6 years or 72 000 miles.
It is also transferable to the next owner.
Wow…

I think this is a great move from VW.
Everyone is, of course, mentioning the Diesel scandal as the reason for offering this.
Maybe it is.
But the main reason, to me, is how unreliable VW cars have been in the US.
(For some reason they have this Golden reputation in Europe…)
They have constantly been rated  near the bottom or reliability surveys for years.

To let you in on something personal, I have owned 2 VWs. Both bought new.
And have experienced first hand the never ending frustrations of owning a car that requites contant trips to the dealer. (The second one, provided to me under California’s great lemon law, was better. Still not great)

I think a 6 year bumper to bumper warranty will do wonders here in the US (This will not be available in other countries)

I also really think this should be extended to ALL their 2018 models.
Jetta, Beetle and Passat owners also deserve piece of mind…

What do you think?
Would this actually make you consider the new Tiguan or Atlas?

  1. Vince, this changes everything! Perhaps they will make a push against the industry standards of 3/36k and 5/60k warranties they way Hyundai pushed the powertrain warranties. Remember when Chrysler had the 7 year/70k and 7yr/100k powertrain warranties?

As current generation Ford Focus owner who feels I've taken my car in way too many times for things that have been no charge and covered under warranty or a recall….would it happen more or less frequent than I have gotten accustomed to?

This is game changing…and now justifies 72 month car loans!

  3. 6 year warranty is pretty impressive. But having owned a horrible Passat and experienced awful service from VW dealerships, I got rid of it as soon as the warranty was up, even though I had purchased an extended one. I don't think I would take a VW if it was free and it came with a lifetime warranty. The VW scandal was just Karma for a bad company.

  4. Really hard to say. After suffering with an 01.5 Passat 1.8t 5A (electrical gremlins, transmission pooped at 11,000 miles – full replacement!), an 02 Jetta (electrical), and a Beetle TDI (an inch thick stack of warranty repairs that I should have kept when it was sold just for proof)… very, very hard to say.

A shame, too, because I loved how every one of them we had drove.

They need to prove it with this generation of vehicles before I would consider one from the next. They've been at this a long time, and should have equal levels of perceived reliability as Honda or Toyota.

  5. The lines on the side are interesting–clearly a throwback to mid-sized Plymouth coupes of the 1970's. (And Dodge Pickups of that same era! )

  6. 6 year warranty helps the WV dealerships generate more revenue as a reward for being loyal during the diesel scandal! It nice that it bumper to bumper too! Shore up one of the major concerns of going with WV brand!

  7. They can have a 10 year warranty and I still wouldn't consider them as long as they have those boring designs.

  8. Not a bad idea to offer a longer warranty, especially for those who purchase rather than lease. For the lease folks this makes little difference unless they end up buying after the lease. One thing about the Atlas that I haven't seen mentioned too often is the fact that Navigation can only be had on the top level trim which starts at $49k! Come on VW, that's ridiculous!!! Navigation should be standard on all trims on a vehicle like this one, or at least available on other trim levels. To limit it to the top level trim is not cool!

  9. Right about Navigation.
But new VWs all come with Apple Car Play/Android Auto so I bet no one would use the VW navigation anyway….

  10. Vince,

I agree many people will use android auto and Apple CarPlay but many more won't and for those people navigation should be available on more than just the top trim level. I can understand not offering on the base trims but there's no excuse for not offering it on mid level trims. A lot of the competition offer navigation on mid level trims AND Android auto/Apple CarPlay too. Sorry VW but despite your new warranty, you will get no sale from me.

  11. You are right. Navigation is not a new gimmick that just came out anymore.
The screen is already there. it's just a matter of (cheap) software now.
