2014 Hyundai Equus
Last Updated:
A few changes here and there make the exterior a bit simpler, better looking.
Big improvement inside. Where it now looks much more like the luxury car it wants to be.
But it is still expensive. It starts at about $7000 less than the Lexus LS.
Which is too much. No matter how good it is, there should be much more of a difference.
For the conservative luxury car buyer, the “Big Lexus” has such a better image than the “Big Hyundai”.
Pretty Solid Update…
Since test driving the Equus a couple of years ago, I always found it to be a rather handsome/distinctive lux-mobile with one of the best equipped/most luxurious interiors this side of Rolls, and this revised interior looks even nicer.
The Lexus service experience needs to be considered, they treat their customers like royalty. Hyundai, not so much. That $1.00 a cup coffee machine in the crowded service waiting room won't help their cause.
At $36k I would buy one in a second. At over 50k… no way. It doesn't have the cache of a Cad or Mercedes, and can't handle like a BMW so if it's a perfect as a Lexus with the backing & quality of Hyundai/Kia– it's worth about 1/3 less than a comparable Lexus and 2/3 less than a Merc or BMW. And not a penny more. Nice looking, but not as nice as a $36k Chrysler–and again, not the cache of a Chrysler 300.
HUGE improvement, especially with the interior.
Vince, as usual, you forget feature content for the money. The LS comes with nothing, while the Equus comes pretty much loaded standard. Once optioned equally, the price discrepancy is $20,000+.
Please do some research.
It just doesn't have an identity of its own so why spent this much. There aren't any unique features either.
This looks like it's designed for geriatrics with bad taste. When the LS was launched, it trounced MB and BMW at their own game by offering a level of luxury and quality that the germans didn't. What is this thing offering other than being cheaper. Nothing. It's a cheap facsimile of a real luxury car. Luxury cars shouldn't rush to the bottom like this, because no affluent customer wants to park this abomination in front of their home.
I only see older white guys in their 50s+ driving these maybe retired IT guys or someone who doesn't really know about cars. I am not convinced Hyundai is ready to swim in that pond yet.

Ignoring that the Genesis surpassed Acura's TL. Yet you not worried about Acura since it's not Korean.
