Tough times ahead for the Corolla and the Civic.
I have to mention that reliability of the current version has not been has high as the Toyota and Honda.
Let’s hope this new version also improves on that.

It just needs some teeth painted on to that big gaping mouth of a front end. Pass.
That front end is hideous. This type of garbage makes the north american Focus seem like an attractive alternative.
i had the mazda3 hatchback with the standard 17 tires. it was terrible in the snow (downright dangerous) and costs more to get the oil change too. for me, it was an econobox (strictly goes by price) but mazda seems to aspire its cars to luxury and sport status. i don’t know how many people have the money to buy a second set of tires dedicate to snow here in the virginia area (we don’t get much snow) or anywhere else for that matter. i sold it 6 months later at a loss for a scion xa. no problem with the snow on standard tires.
this one’s front end looks too weird for my taste.
The front end definitely ruins the styling of the car overall. It’s so our of proportion — creates a clown-like visual.
That front end is the ugliest thing this side of the Acura shield. As a matter of fact, I’d rather have the Acura shield than that hideous thing.
Tough times ahead for the corolla and civic?? That what everyone said about the current mazda 3.
Corolla and civic will still clean this up.
Remember the Dodge/Plymouth Neon ad campaign when it was first introduced? ‘Hi’. This car makes me think back to that for some reason…
i just can’t get myself to like it………….. i was a big fan of the last gen. civic looks better than this.
I’m a current owner of a Mazda3 and have not had any reliability problems whatsoever with my car. I think the new 3 looks great, and the driving experience, handling, available options, and fact that it is made in Japan put this car leagues ahead of the Corolla or Civic
I know someone who has the Mazda3 2.3, no issues with it after almost two years of ownership. I have a Corolla, I would buy this car in a second if I absolutely needed a new car…. it handles better than any car in its class hands down. (Yes, even the Jetta, which I have driven.)
I think it looks pretty good. I will admit though that it does have quite the smilie face though. In place of a front liscence plate someone should put some bugs bunny buck teeth. Again I do like the car though and would buy it.
The current Mazda 3 is vastly better than the Corolla and Civic. The new one will clean their clocks. Though I do agree that the front of this thing is bizarre in this shot. So just buy a black one.
^ ^ ^
I completely agree. Corollas & Civics will always rule the roads.
& I thought I'd like this design much more… but I don't.. I prefer the last generation design better.
Damn. That controversial front end looked all right to me in the photos but now that I see it moving, I have to admit it does look a bit weird. It’s reminding me a bit of the Peugeot “shark mouth”, which I hate. I will have to wait to see it in the metal to make my mind up about it.

Right, that is what everyone says but the Civic and Corolla still outsell this by about 5 to 1.
Wow, john m….its funny you mentioned that. I liked this car’s pics, but i wonder if a (white)front license plate will look like buck teeth. I foresee owners getting a black line drawn down the center of their plates.
What an ugly front end! So now we wait for the 2013 mid-cycle refresh for them to fix this! 🙂
“Right, that is what everyone says but the Civic and Corolla still outsell this by about 5 to 1.”
That means nothing. The Cutlass was the most popular car in the 80s. The Pinto and the Vega were the most popular cars in the 70s. The Camry is the most popular car now. Never underestimate the stupidity of the masses.

Why do car companies even hire designers…they are worthless at best.
I think the current Mazda 3 is better than the Civic or Corolla and assume the next 3 will be even better, BUT being better does not always mean better sales. The buying public may simply be unaware of the facts, unwilling to believe the facts, etc. Example, the current wonderful Malibu sales are less than the current horrid Camry sales.

Only the big american three!!
I’m changing my mind. The new front end is starting to get on my nerves. The huge grill opening is just……well…..huge. It’s too big and makes the front end look really weird when viewed head on. The rest off the car looks great though as well as the interior. I’m also dissappointed with the gas mileage of the 2.5. I think I’ve seen 21/29. I’ve seen mid-size cars get at least that.
