I guess a roomy import car based SUV for $26 000 is fine.
But when you are pushing $40 000, image is an issue.
And Hyundai has either no image, or a bad one. No matter how good their cars are right now.

I think you may be writing this one off to fast. Not sure, but in Canada I would guess this means this car will be about $5k cheaper than the Mazda CX-9. And probably about the same from the new Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. If you’re a typical family, $5 is real money. Since Hyundai is wininng all kinds of awards these days, well it’s maybe not a bad choice as a lease, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for high resale value. I’ve seen a number of Sante Fe’s and they look pretty darn nice to me. Hyundai’s value equation seems to be gaining momentum here, maybe we’re more value oriented and have are able to forget about the Pony. But Honda and Toyota made some pretty crappy cars in their early years too.
Still no built-in navigation for US models, huh?
Looks good, if this car can beat the hype in Quality, technology and performance, maybe it is just what Hyundai needs to improve its image.
Lets see… I can get a fully loaded one of these or the base one of these and a Toyota Corolla.
Options worth the cost of a Corolla… Hummm. Wonder what the profit margin is on a full loaded SUV.
35K fully loaded and still no NAV? Big mistake. I don’t use mine to oftern in my Lexus, but the backup camera feature alone makes it worth the price.
Vince, i recal when the Xg300 camee out, and the onlines mags, newpapers all said” who will buy a25,000 dollar Hyundai?” Seems they all had to eat crow ( especially with the new Azera out, and might be hitting the 20-30K units per year sold area..selling around 2000 units-give or take, every month).
Same for the mimivan… 30-35K? it’s selling,but not as well as Kia’s. Kia hit over 7000 units in Feb. Not bad for 23-30K+ vehicles.
Now, if they would only concentrate ON CARS AGAIN…. and sell either that cool looking quarmaQ, or at kia, the 3 door and sedan C’eed(Pro-c’eed and C’eed) as Spectra’s here, then I’d be more interested. An Aside:

I’ve learned my lesson once already. I wouldn’t spend 10k on another Hyundai, and no way in hell would I spend real money on this crap. These cars are designed to be disposable unreliable transportation. This brand has been fooling or buying-off automotive publications for the past three years, but they have a long way to go before competing against the Japanese and even domestic alternatives.
Priced from $26,000? You guys in the US have no idea how easy you have it when it comes to car pricing – with the current £=$ exchange rate of £1=$1.92 that’s the sort of money can be charged for a low spec Ford Focus 1.4 in the UK.
Even the top spec Veracruz 3.8 Limited equipped with the Ultimate package comes in at a little more than £20,000, and thats the sort of money we pay for a basic 2.2CRDi Santa Fé!
The US prices never include any taxes or registration.
In California our sales tax is 8.25%.
And registration on a #26 000 car would be around $350 or $400. I think.
It is still much less than in Europe.
The Europeans pay like 20% VAT tax and at least 15% import tax that is included in their car prices. Everything is expensive in europe to pay for the welfare state.
Hyundai has become competitive over the last 4 years or so. Good to see their is more competition in all car segments now. This will help drive auto prices down. It will also drive GM/Ford/Chrysler nuts as well.
A ten-year-old Lexus design for $30k? No thanks.
Don’t mean to change the subject but does anyone know if Hyundai is going to have a spin off luxury division in the future like Lexus or Infiniti?
The new Veracruz is about $1000 more expensive than a new Toyota Highlander, a main competitor.

Well, I would buy a Hyundai over any Big 3( see some of vince’s old car comparions, from last June, of 06, IIRC… Cobalt, a higher priced car, was given a lower “rating”vs the Accent)right now.
Went to the autoshow this weekend, and I concur with Vince, andmany others, the Aura,is cheap plastics, and the seat cushion seemed overtly aggressive( it was tight fitting! Like some sporty cars, but why? It was over bolstered. No Thanks).
Now, Over a Toyota or Honda? Then things get tough, as prices have crept upward some.
Personally, I do not mind Hyundai, depsite the issues we have had in the past( 99 sonats gls v6, new radiator,new alternator..this was free under warranty, new radio,and was junky by 113,000 miles, traded it in @ 119,000. 01 tibby, great, until 99K, needed new axle and bearings up front—paid by warranty, but @103K, tranny was on it’s way out, and forced to buy another Hyundai…still was paying on 01 , had 2 years left…
got 04 sonata, and at 31K, rear windows needed new gaskets and regulators. Ok for now. 40Kmiles, 30 months old,but trade-in value is a killer, too! Gues syou could say that for Big 3, Mitsu, Suzuki,
perhaps some Mazdas)I donotmind hte new Azera(xg300, then xg350, now Azera).. No recalls since launch 5-6 years ago!
That’s the good new for hyundai( seems their higher priced stuff lasts longer? makes sense. for 25-30K, stuff sshould be good).
Problem is, I can’t afford it, and MPG is too low for my needs.
If it is over 25K, it should be OK.
If it’s not, Long term may not be as good( see my rant above). I have also had issues, though, with 97 nissan 200sx, 87″Chevy” Spectrum, and a 90 Sentra, under warranty, and out of warranty
Guess no such thing as a perfect car, from any maker?Even Toyota and Honda have had recalls recently!
