Mustang Sedan!

Last Updated:

Don’t worry, it won’t look like this.
This illustration is obviously basd on the current generation model.
But Ford is actually working on both a sedan and a wagon version of the next generation Mustang which will be based on the next Australian Falcon platform. (that was along sentence…)

Not sure yet if this will be a true 4 door or something like the RX8..
.
Could we call that a desperate move to cash in on the only successful car they have?

  1. This looks awesome! Except the two extra doors of course! I like the idea of the coupe like 4 door, just make it more coupe looking. It looks better than the Italian designed one.

  2. I thoughtit was bad enough that Ford produced Mustangs off the Pinto platform in the mid 70’s. Now they are going to further dilute the Mustang brand with sedans & wagons? Where will these cars fit in the product line up. Is Ford going to dump the Fusion? So far I am not very “thrilled” by this news. I will have to wait and see what the future holds. This is further proof to me the Ford is running out of ideas for product.

  3. Is anyone out there old enough to recall what ford did to the t-bird in the 60’s when it grew 2 more doors. God help us!
A saturn-esque suicide half door setup might work but ford is treading on very thin ice here, this is how to ruin a legend – again. A two door sport wagon however does sound awesome juts not the one pictured above.

  4. well, the mulitple models plan works for the 3 series 😉

and it would be nice to have something to compete with the dodge charger. the current mustang’s interior design is way better than the charger’s, imho. (though both suffer from low quality). plus, it would also compete with pontiac’s forthcoming G7/8 sedan.

  5. I hope they’ll finally get rid of the f***ing solid rear axel… If somebody wants to do serious drag racing, they’ll modify the car anyway. So why not make this car for the road…instead…

  6. By the way… if we look at the new products ford is bringing to the US these days, we can only expect the new mustang to be heavily based on the old one…

Let’s just make a quick list : New explorer, new expedition, new focus, new freestar (a refreshed windstar), new fusion. Nothing in that list really performs on the market. It’s time to wake up… Ford is making us eat for lunch what we ate yesterday for supper. Maybe it’s still good but not quite exciting.

  7. How about a Mustang mini van and SUV. YEAH! Now THAT would be an awesome idea would’nt it Ford? Come on Ford…You can do better than this! What are you paying your engineers and marketing team for?! Ford needs new blood and fresh ideas DESPERATEY!

  8. Shades of those horrid Mercury Cougars of the early 80s. How to trash a model name and make it unuseable. Hope they don’t forget to add the fake wood panelling. You Yanks used to love that!

  9. The Clock’s Still Ticking
Ford has a chance of pulling off a save by producing vehicles that consumer want this is not it.

  10. Yep. I agree with most other posters, this is Not The Way Forward.
They have the Excellent Sedan and 5 door hatch called the Mondeo, that would most likely fly off of the lots, yet, they build this abomintation? why?

Ford, it’s not too late to talk to Renault/Nissan! lol.

  11. Hey 6:28, if it was up to Ford we would still have to love the fake wood paneling. It seems to me that Ford STILL is’nt listening to the customer. It seems they are only listening to the drag racers(nothing against them at all). It would’nt suprise me if they did put solid axle’s in these mustang products. I can see it now…the Aussy Ford Galaxy will have all the latest and greatest and we “Yanks” will get stuck with the usual crap sandwich that Ford believes we are supposed to like. I wonder if anyone from Ford will read these comments. Probably not. NOW on the good side I’ve been reading on various sites that Ford is coming out with a dual clutch manumatic that will start out in Volvo’s and will end up in Ford products. That’s good. I hear GM is working on one too. Hey Vince, have you heard anything on this?

  12. A very interesting approach ford is taking. Mustang is legend, a car associated with FORD perfomance, a model part of the ford line, not a brand. The mustang gives reason to love ford. Mustangs have been attracting people to ford showrooms for decades. people instantly recognize a mustang when they see one. A mustang sedan? what happened to the 427 concept? they could base that on the next gen falcon platform. a mustang sedan would, as many of you said, dilute the brand. the charger is barely an exception because it is no where near as legendary as the Mustang, and the Mustang has been with us since 1964, keeping the same basic styling formula. however, a suicide door variation (a la rx8) is a more sensible addition to the lineup.

  13. I say scrap Ford altogether and start a new brand called Mustang!? I’ve always hated the aesthetics of that blue oval on a hood anyway. Prancing horse is much more appealing ;-D

  14. Wow. I mean… WOW. Just when you think that this company couldn’t *possibly* doing anything to screw itself over any worse than it already has (letting the once-popular Focus fade virtually untouched into nothing-ness, ditto on the Taurus, rolling out the new Five Hundred to the biggest yawn the world ever saw, quietly scrapping all those hybrids they claimed they were going to be making by decade’s end, and riding the body-on-frame SUV craze all the way to the bitter, bitter end, to name just a few) it goes and proves that there is absolutely no limit… no boundary to the conspicuous stupidity of this company and its management. Clearly, their ineptitude is like deep space… it’s infinite… and they will stop at nothing until they’ve turned over every stone of success the company ever had, and crushed it into dust.

I’m beginning to think that the decision makers and idea people at Ford are on the Toyota payroll.

I’m beginning to think that the decision makers and writers at AutoWeek, Cnn, etc. shouldn’t be on anyone’s payroll
