Auto show #5. New Toyota Tundra

Last Updated:

The big japanese guy from Texas.
Seems like some people hate it, others love it.

I don’t think it will really scare Chevy or Ford. Full size pick up truck buyers are pretty faithful to their brands.
I guess it is for the ones who want something different…

  1. too bad Toyota is not bold enough to offer Hybrid Trucks this time.

I’m sure that’s down the pipe, since that would really attract new buyers.

  2. Up til this year, I would agree with you Vince. However, I think buyers are becoming more discerning in their purchases, and if another company offers a better vehicle for the money…

They just might go for it.

I am actually surprised at how many Nissan full size pickup’s I see here in the heartland.

  3. What’s going on with the Tundra’s interior? It looks like 2 different interiors grafted together. Like 2 different teams designed 2 different interiors. All it needs is a strip of tape down the middle – that’s side’s yours and this side’s mine.

  4. They will get sales from the people who were burned by GM/Ford/Dodge… Fleet managers in particular.

  5. Full size pick up truck buyers are pretty faithful to their brands.

It’s a white trash, redneck thing.

This Toyota will steal some thunder from the boneheads, however. The Tundra is the Lexus of trucks, offering a level of refinement the domestics can only dream of. But to be fair, the new GM offerings are very nice, too.

  6. I recently purchased my first real truck, an 06 F150. If I had it to do all over again and I had this Tundra as one of my options… I’d still buy the F-150. The interior on this Tundra is a friggin nightmare! The body is ok, but the grille is horrible and unoriginal and the taillights looks like they were copied from a Titan. Speaking of a Titan, a co-worker purchased his 9 months ago and he has so many problems with his that he’s selling it when it hits a year old. Sorry guys but Ford, Chevy, and Dodge will rest a little better aftere the hype wears off and reality kicks in. Ridgeline anyone???

  7. I also heard about the Totan’s many problems.
    Weird…
I think the Ford and new GM trucks are pretty hard to beat.
Most people looking for a large pick up would find them great. And they are now all pretty refined.
Not too many people look for Lexus comfort in a pick up.

  8. who y the hell would buy this in america
maybe in europe or japan where they hate us but not here
no one will get this carap

  9. It’s a white trash, redneck thing.

You are an idiot! GM, Dodge, and Ford’s trucks are everywhere. I’m not a white trash redneck, hell I’m not even white. Like Vince said, no one wants Lexus type refinement in a pickup. It’s a truck duh!!!!

  10. Like Vince said, no one wants Lexus type refinement in a pickup. It’s a truck duh!!!!

Then why have Ford, GM, and Chrysler gone to such great lengths to refine them?

  11. The Tundra’s front end has a dopey, cartoonish look to it. I can imagine what the design process was like – “ah so, it velly important we make new truck rook rike mookie-mookie big melican pickup!”

  12. Then why have Ford, GM, and Chrysler gone to such great lengths to refine them?

Get your story straight, you domestic bashers criticize that they don’t update enough, now they are going to great lengths to “refine” which is it? The F-150’s interior hasn’t been changed since the redesign. Now who’s going to great lengths???

  13. If it is like their cars…
First a few “Nuts ” will buy them. Then their friends will start to realise they are not “nuts”. Then Toyota will put out the next model without the things that people dont like.
Then Ford/GM/Dodge will start to worry. I think they need to start worrying now, because Toyota have a history of sneaking up on them.

  14. Fact is, it would be nice to believe that American manufacturers will always have this one last sales stronghold… I personally wouldn’t be caught dead in a Japanese truck… but history has proven that that’s a dangerous attitude. GM, Ford and Dodge should be very worried by this truck, not only because it’s being built in the heart of Texas, skewing the lines of what’s really “Japanese”, but moreso because in just about every possible way, the Japanese have already come in and eaten their lunch. Being worried is a good thing. It’s not a sign of weakness, but of intelligence. It keeps you on your toes.

  15. I love it how people mention the word “refinement” like they know what they’re talking about. The last Tundra had an interior about as refined as a 1995 Corolla. That is to day, not great. I haven’t been in the new Tundra, but the interior looks like a hodge-podge of goofiness. It doesn’t appear nearly as “refined” as the three year old F150, which has was regarded as groundbreaking for this class when it was introduced. The Tundra isn’t a threat to the F150 as much as the new GM trucks appear to be.

  16. “Wow…how does a post about the Tundra result in an idiot mocking Asians…”

Yet you evidently find the “white trash redneck” comment totally acceptable, since you have nothing to say about that.

  17. the sad truth is this, the Titan and this dog will all but finish off the N.American market. this means, it’s OVER!

  18. “Yet you evidently find the “white trash redneck” comment totally acceptable, since you have nothing to say about that.”

That comment was at least somewhat relevant (to that poster), what the stereotypical accent had to do with anything though…I don’t know.

  19. As per JD Power, about 50% of the large truck buying public will never purchase an import. The domestic truck market is extremely healthly and profitable ( obviously, if not why get in it) and to make matter worse, Toyota’s fuel economy is just as bad or worse than its competitors. What does Toyota offer different? Refinement, its there. better mpg, no. Dependabilty? it’s there. Normally Toyota goes into a market where things are lacking and make a difference. What is different? Toyota has spent almost 3 times the estimate to make a factory for the production of the Tundra and to modify all the service areas to accomodate the trucks (expanding the bays, lifts etc) this is a huge undertaking. Most don’t realize how expensive and how much is riding on the success just to have a presence in this very polarized market. Thinking red or blue doesn’t apply here as much and many had thought. Even some of my must liberal friends can’t see purchasing something that hasn’t been proven, and the domestic truck market has been doing what it has done best for some time now…

  20. “That comment was at least somewhat relevant (to that poster), what the stereotypical accent had to do with anything though…I don’t know.”

And exactly how is the “white trash redneck” comment relevant to this post? Do only “white trash rednecks” drive American pickups? And since this is about an Asian truck, why isn’t the Asian reference just as relevant? Because you say so?

    Soyonara

  21. Now who’s going to great lengths???

Certainly not you. The truck/SUV market (while down a bit) is lucrative for manufacturers. They all have made great strides in quality over previous models. Toyota included. The new GM offerings are doing quite well in the ratings.

But enough of defending ridiculous vehicles. Motor Trend just gave a long term report on the GMC Yukon. They never got better than 12 mpg combined when the beast is rated 15/20 mpg. Manufacturers can refine the monsters, but these road hogs still eat like pigs as do the Americans who buy them.

  22. Toyota full size.I see, Now, they have it all, they will decimate the N/A industry. They made it public, they will not rest until GM is a gonner. What you gonna do ’bout it, Huh! nothing that’s what, ya, nothing
