Lancia: the next chapter…
Last Updated:
Apparently, Stellantis has big plans for the old Lancia brand. And it all starts with the new logo you see here.
Lancia has been almost dead for years. They are currently only producing one model: the Fiat 500-based Ypsilon. And that car is only sold in Italy. Stellantis claimed last year that a brand-new Ypsilon was coming in 2024. It will be based on the current CMP platform and will be offered as a Hybrid or EV. As well as the Aurelia SUV and a new Delta hatchback. These new EVs will be launched between 2024 and 2028.
Stellantis wants to turn Lancia into the premium brand it used to be. Although they already have Alfa-Romeo and DS.
Although Lancia will be relaunched as a “global brand”, it won’t be coming to the US. It will come back to Europe, starting with Germany and France. And later expand to Australia, South Africa, and Japan.
I call BS on this one. Lancia is a dead brand. Alfa Romeo is on its death bed and FIAT has no good sellers in Europe apart from the 500. So why invest in Lancia?
They have soooo many brands, there is no way they will ever be able to keep even 1/2 of them going in the long term. Why bother trying to resurrect one that has no real image or brand loyalty? Invest that money into Alfa or something.
Let’s not forget that the Ypsilon is still sold alone more than the Alfa worldwide. Although only available in Italy!
If it is done skillfully in Europe, it can be successful. I’m just afraid of the pricing. New Ypsilon should be an upmarket car rather than premium. Also Alfa does not have any car in the B segment. Can’t wait to see the new Ypsilon. Fingers crossed!
If they had any real care in the world, they would focus on Dodge & Chrysler. Those still exist in the money hungry & grubby American hands. We will pay big bucks for toys. They can’t expect Jeep to pay for everything.
They are starting to be like GM back when they had their hand in to many cookie jars. Then they became “Government Motors” when they had to be bailed out.
Bad idea. Loosing direction fast. 4xe ain’t going to pay the bills forever. They can barley keep the Lights on.
The relaunch of Lancia was taken into consideration because, despite being a brand with only one model: the Ypsilon, it sells a lot in Italy. So they hope to replicate the success in some other European market with models that will in fact be DS with different bodywork. Probably, the new Ypsilon arriving in 2024 will not be a city car but a small crossover, just like the DS3 Cross.
Instead of investing in a brand no longer being made, why not redesign one of the Dodge’s that haven’t been changed in over a decade?
