2026 VW Polo.
Last Updated:
VW ended production of the Polo compact. After 40 years and many generations, the Polo is dead. Or is it?
VW showed an ID.2all concept last year that is supposed to be a preview of their upcoming affordable EV. The concept was trying very hard to look like the original VW Golf, which was designed by the Giugiaro. And still, after all these years, it doesn’t look as good as the original.
There is now a rumor the new EV will actually be called “Polo”. Which would make a lot more sense than “ID.Something”.
VW‘s Spanish factory built over 8 million Polos over the years, and is now being prepared to build 2 new EVs starting in 2026. While we are not scheduled to get the Polo EV over here, we will probably be getting a small SUV model based on the car.
VW’s head designer says the production model of the concept “looks even better”. All I can say is “Let’s hope so”. The concept is cute but also looks like it came out years ago. By the time it actually comes out almost 2 years from now, it will really need to look a bit better. The interior is super simple which is OK for an affordable car. But it also lacks any style. 2 screens on a dasn and a flat console isn’t that much of a style. At any price.
VW is still targeting a price of under 25,000 Euros for the new EV. Which is fine but who really knows how much it will be in 2 years. VW is currently in trouble and they need, again, to cut costs. Germany’s current economic problems pushed the country to stop offering incentives for EVs and sales have been tanking for the past few months.
Volkswagen hasn’t ended Polo production, it only stopped building it in the Pamplona plant. Polo production continues in South Africa for export.
VW would need to extract its head from its posterior first in order to redesign a successful B-class product. Thats a very competitive class in Europe, and let’s be honest… VW just isn’t up to the task, BEV or otherwise.
