Acura MDX A-Spec, quick take.

Last Updated:

I just test-drove the top-of-the-line Acura MDX Type-S a few weeks ago, but was wondering what it’s like to drive the more affordable version soon after. Is the Type-S extra $7000 over a loaded A-Spec model worth it? It depends…

Outside, the loaded A-Spec with the “Sport appearance package” looks quite similar to the Type-S. However, the ghastly black wheels of the cheaper model are no match for the great-looking wheels from the Type-S.

Interiors are of course very similar. Although I did prefer the classy cream/black interior combo from the Type-S over the red interior of the A-Spec. But both are available. The main change for 2025 MDX is the redesigned console and the touch screen, which is again standard on both trims.

The sound system has 19 speakers but is just not as excellent as the one in the Type-S. It’s still really good, but that 31-speaker system from the Type-S is quite a spoiler.

I also had a lot of trouble connecting my phone and CarpPlay was out most of the time, which is quite frustrating.

Otherwise, the interior is still very luxurious and quite roomy. Except for the 3rd row that should really be for children only.

The driving experience is, of course, where the difference is.

Compared to the Type-S, the MDX feels slower and lumpier. It seems heavier to handle and not as agile as the Type-S. While 290HP from the super smooth 3.5 Liter V6 sounds good, it’s just not as lively as the 3.0 Turbo from the Type -S. The MDX is smooth, but the Type S in comfort mode is actually a bit more comfortable, thanks to its excellent adaptive air suspension.

The steering is also more rewarding on the Type-S. The regular MDX steering feel is pretty light even in Sport mode. And finally, the transmission is a bit slow to downshift on the MDX. Something I didn’t notice at all with the Type-S.

I actually think the difference is worth it if you want the best MDX available. The Type-S is a fantastic vehicle. While I think the regular MDX word is better as a lower-end model. Not the loaded A-Spec Advance with that ghastly sports package wheels.

The “technology” trim still has the 19-speaker sound system and everything else you need. All for around $58,000.

I think these are the two best trims available on the MDX. The base Technology or the Type-S.

But really, who am I to say…

  1. Nice review. I am not a fan of the bordello interior. Also, MPG is not competitive for either one of the two.
