Toyota Supra.

Last Updated:

As you can see, a possible next-generation Toyota Supra is quite a popular subject.

The current generation came out in 2019, after a 17-year hiatus. This new 5th generation is actually based on the recurrent BMW Z4 and is not quite a real Toyota. Even its engines are from BMW. Both the Supra and Z4 are built in Austria.

The first generation came out in 1979 and was basically a more luxurious and powerful 6-cylinder version of the Toyota Celica. The same recipe was applied to the 2nd generation in 1982. For the 3rd generation, the Toyota Supra became its own model with a specific design unrelated to the Celica.

There will probably be another generation after the current version, but it will not be related to a BMW anymore. There have been many rumors about it. Most people think it will of course be a Hybrid, since… Toyota.

Toyota has even produced an Anime cartoon called GRIP, showing a possible lineup of future sporty models. They’re even mentioning an all-new Celeica generation. Which would be nice if kept affordable.

Toyota’s Sean Hanley in Australia even mentioned “There is no plan to discontinue the Supra brand in this car company”. I guess low sale numbers do not really matter and they see the Supra has a good image builder?

Only 2652 Supras were sold in the US last year. Which isn’t much but I guess enough to keep it around for another generation at least?

Toyota has recently introduced new 1.5 Liter and 2.0 Liter Turbo engines to be used in future Hybrid cars. This would also mean no more 6 cylinders for the Supra.

Which one of these images above would be your favorite for a new Supra?

  1. a copy of Acura’s Chiaki’s Journey to introduce the Integra and Integra TypeS to long time fans. At least they’re replacing the current Supra. That car is a mechanical and visual mess.
