I still don’t see the point of a new Mazda CX-5 when the brand already offers a very similar Mazda CX-50, but a CX-5 is somehow around the corner. But I also don’t see the point of offering both the CX-70 and CX-90 which are the exact same cars. So who knows…
The illustrations above basically show an SUV version of the Mazda 6e EV sedan just introduced in Europe last week. And in China a few months ago. Which I think is wrong. Since that model was based on the Chinese Changan sedan and isn’t a pure Mazda product. Unlike the CX-5.
The new Mazda CX-5 is rumored to be showing up this year along with a new CX-30 replacement called the CX-20, for some reason. As I said, the CX-50 is basically the same size as the CX-5 and offers similar powertrains. All in a better-looking and more modern package. For about $1800 more. Since the next CX-5 will probably be a bit more expensive these two might end up at almost the same price.
Besides a new design, the new CX-5 will feature a new in-house hybrid powertrain. Unlike the one used in the CX-50 which is straight from Toyota. There is even a report about a PHEV version of the next CX-5. In Europe, the base powertrain will be a mild-hybrid version of the 2.5 Liter non-turbo engine. Apparently, some European Mazda dealers have already seen the new CX-5 and described it as “sharpened up”. It is also a bit longer than the current model.
Let’s also hope Mazda gets a little bit more adventurous with the new CX-5. And maybe, just maybe, they could finally get rid of their giant ghastly grilles…
