Citroen 2CV.

Last Updated:

This maybe a car that has never been mentioned on this site. And yet, there has been a new rumor about Citroen working on a new version of the classic 2CV.

This rumor started a few days ago but I’ve also seen, a day or two later, something from Citroen denying the whole thing. They are apparently not actually working on a new retro and cheap EV since it would compete against their new eC3, which is already affordable starting at around 20,000 Euros.

Still, a new modern 2 CV has been the subject of a few rumors for decades. Especially since other European retro cars saw new versions. Like the VW Beetle and Mini Cooper. More recently even Renault is jumping into the retro-futuristic EV with a new R5 (LeCar in the US) and R4. And a new Twingo EV is around the corner as well.

Back in 2009, Citroen gave hope to all the 2CV fans with a very nice Revolt-e Concept. Something that was quite dynamic and attractive. And something that could have aged pretty well. However, something that might have been a bit too fancy for a true 2CV revival.

Either way, that concept never became anything…

More recently, in 2022, we have seen another take on the new 2CV idea from independent designer Dejan Hristov. And I think it looks great, and exactly what a new 2CV should look like. It does look quite modern and attractive but especially, it looks inexpensive. Which is the main point of a 2CV. The original 2CV was produced from 1948 to 1990. With almost 4 million of them sold in many countries.

I am sure Stelantis is waiting to see how the 3 new retro EVs from Renault will do in the marketplace. If they do well, we might see a brand new small inexpensive 2 CV after all… Especially if the new boring-looking (and very “un-citroen-like”) eC3 does poorly.

There is still hope.
