Tesla Model Y: China’s best seller.
Last Updated:
It is now official, the Tesla Model Y was China’s best-selling car in 2024. Barely…
With an amazing 480,309 units sold in 12 months, which is quite an amazing feast. It beat the BYD Qin Plus sedan by just 284 units. This is a 5,23% jump from last year for Model Y in China. Which was enough to put it on top.
A different story in Europe where the Tesla Model Y sale numbers went down in many countries. Like Norway where sales were down 27%. And of course, the US with a 6% decline while EV sales in general were up 7.6%.
This is great news for the revised 2025 Model Y which already seems to be better than the current model in every way. That means it will probably be even more popular in China this year.
This is the car that sold only 284 fewer units than the Model Y in China, the BYD Qin Plus.
A pretty mundane-looking sedan that came out in 2021. It is a revised version of another model that came out in 2018. Nothing all-new. And a very derivative design.
It is available with ICE, Hybrid, or EV powertrains. Which could explain why it is so popular. It is also probably super cheap.
It’s obvious China is not only Tesla’s largest market, but it is also growing. Maybe that’s why crazy Elon Musk doesn’t care about EV rebates in the US.
However, he’s not fighting these rebates in China. Where buyers get tax incentives of up to over $4000 for buying an EV. And almost $3000 for replacing an older ICE model with a new EV.
