Chrysler Newport.

Last Updated:

Until a few months ago, it seemed Stelantis was planning a few all-new models for Chrysler. Among them were 2 new crossovers/SUVs. As well as a revised Chrysler Pacific minivan and an EV version later. A possible sedan (and even a coupe) was also mentioned.

What they need is something. Anything, and they needed it yesterday. A new Newport sedan based on the new Dodge Charger EV wouldn’t be such a bad thing. It could also be done quicker than a fully new car even if they will all be sharing the same platform anyway. A 4-door new Chrysler sedan based on the upcoming Charger would at least put the brand back in the news, which is something that is also desperately needed.

Dodge is transitioning from the Challenger to the new 2025 Charger pretty quickly. They didn’t wait years to replace the old Challenger.

Chrysler’s first new model is supposed to be a version of the new Jeep Wagoneer S. Just like the Dodge Stealth and Durango EV. Although it might have to be priced even higher than the Jeep since you know, it’s a Chrysler. Something that could be difficult with Jeep’s recent move upmarket and pretty crazy prices.

Chrysler’s CEO mentioned that all upcoming models would be based on the Halcyon concept design language. A pretty crazy futuristic concept that is actually hard to imagine as a production car.

I think Chrysler could pull something out of its past. Just like Dodge did with the new Charger.

Especially an SUV…

Here are some original ads for the Newport from the 1960s. As well as the last generation that came out in 1979. And killed just 2 years later…

While it was pretty popular in its first year with over 60,000 of them sold, things went south fast. With just over 9000 units sold the next year. All the way down to 5500 in 1981.

I know it’s a gamble. But the Charger is one as well. A new Chrysler sedan based on the STLA platform would be a nice addition to a new Chrysler lineup. If there is one that is. The last word we heard a few weeks ago was that work on the new SUV had been stopped.

Who really knows…
