VW ID.1

Last Updated:

VW just released a teaser image of their upcoming EV concept. The production version will be the brand’s cheapest EV, starting at around $20,000. The concept could be called the “ID.Every1”.

So far, VW has shown us the upcoming ID.2 as a concept called the ID.2All last year. That model will start at around $25,000 or so. It will be followed by a slightly larger SUV/Crossover version.

Apparently, the ID.2 is still on track for a late 2025/early 2026 start of production. Or at least we will see the production model by then. VW’s head designer even said the production car would look better than the concept. Whatever that means.

The ID.2 concept design was heavily inspired by older Golf generations, which is not a bad thing at all. However, the interior was pretty, should I say, “uninspired” despite the really cool Classic and Vintage modes available for the screen. The rest of the interior seems very cold and designed by robots.

VW also came up with another catchphrase about their upcoming designs. “we’re going back to where we came from”. Which is of course very vague. Since VW came from the Beetle, that would mean the original VW should be an influence. Instead, we see more of the 2nd or 3rd generation Golf in the ID.2. And not even the best looking one which was the Giugiaro-designed original 1st generation from 1974.

At least the teaser above does have a bit of a retro feel to it somehow. I am glad to see an effort to have almost circular headlights. Something the ID.Buzz should have had. Maybe this little ID.1 will look more like the Giugiaro Golf after all, which would be really great.

However, we will probably not see this over here at all. Since VW stillthings the US only likes big cars and SUVs.

In Europe, this new affordable EV will compete with the new Citroen e-C3 and the upcoming retro/futuristic Renault Twingo EV.
