VW Tiguan PHEV.

The new VW Tiguan will soon be available in a PHEV model.
The previous generation was already offering such a powertrain in some markets, but never in the US. In the past, VW had mentioned that none of its PHEV models would make it to North America. But late last year and earlier this year, VW changed its tune and announced that a Tiguan PHEV and even an Atlas PHEV were planned for the US.
The Tiguan PHEV has already been caught testing in China. The powertrain will use a 1.5-liter engine with a larger battery pack than in previous versions. The older version used VW’s previous 1.4-liter engine.
The new model is expected to achieve a 63-mile EV-only range, which could still be around 50 miles EPA.
That would be nice if it even happens. GM mentioned PHEVs as well last year, and we haven’t heard anything since. While the PHEV version of the new Chevrolet Equinox has been on sale in China since last year.
VW is currently in trouble in the US with the new tariffs on imported cars and car parts. They have already announced they will add a line to their cars’ window stickers called “import fee” so people know exactly how much extra US buyers will pay due to the new tariffs.
A nice touch, but this will not solve the problem of higher prices and lower sales numbers. The Tiguan for the US market started production last December in Mexico.
Currently, the vastly improved Tiguan is only about $1000 more than the previous model.
