2027 Hyundai Elantra
Last Updated:

These are new spy shots of the redesigned Hyundai Elantra for 2027. Which is rumored to be a bit of a retro futuristic design. As far as we can see on this camouflaged prototype, the very flat roof and straight A-pillar could point to something a bit retro. And again, unfortunatelly, the next Elantra will be another fake hatchback. A fast back car with a small regular trunk opening…
The current generation Hyundai Elantra came out back in 2020. It received a “mid-cycle facelift” about 2 years ago. The new generation is rumored to come sometime next year.
Over the years, the Elantra has become and very modern-looking sedan. There is now a rumor from Korea about the next generation’s design being influenced by some past models. Which I really hope won’t really happen. I really cannot think of a super great-looking Elantra from many generations ago. the Elantra has evolved into a very nice looking modern sedan. Something it wasn’t that long ago.
The Elantra will be a very important car for Hyundai since by that time, as the Sonata could be gone. And will not be replaced, at least in the US. The new Elantra could even grow a little bit in order to replace both models. It will probably also end up being Hyundai’s last ICE sedan. Since they are one of the most aggressive EV brands in the world already offering an almost full portfolio of electric models.
The new car is also rumored to keep the current generation’s platform, which makes sense. It’s been a trend for the past couple of years for most manufacturers who have been spending most of their R&D money on EVs.
By 2027, the new Elantra could also be a hybrid-only model or even a PHEV. By then there will also be a new Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla and both of these could have a standard EV powertrain.
The last ICE Elantra could turn out to be quite an interesting new car…
The fifth gen Elantra sedan was a true looker with an attractively sleek and swoopy exterior design (this gen was developed during Hyundai’s impressive “Fluidic Sculpture” design era, when most of the vehicles in the brand’s lineup were definitely head turners). I would be thrilled if Hyundai was referencing this generation for its next gen Elantra sedan. Unfortunately, the spy shots seem to suggest otherwise. What little we can see in the spy shots doesn’t look promising. Considering how repulsively awkward its Kia K4 platform mate looks, I hold out little hope that this new gen Elantra will be anything that will remotely appeal to me.
I actually owned a fifth gen model. It was a great car!
Vince: “By then there will also be a new Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla and both of these could have a standard EV powertrain.” Are you suggesting that they will no longer be offered with ICE? That seems doubtful to happen anytime soon.
Will it finally have a half-decent stereo?
I went car shopping with a friend this spring. As much as the Elantra made sense rationally, he just couldn’t get past the aweful sound system.
Looks like they are using the awkward thick c-pillar from the home-market Grandeur, itself a retro-modernization of the 1990s model. Not a fan.
