2027 Hyundai Elantra.

It seems there is a new photo of the next-generation Hyundai Elantra prototype every day or so. I have even seen a few taken in the US. This new image shows the very modern-looking taillights. It also shows a pretty wide sedan. Something reminiscent of the Kia K4. Which tends to look rather odd from some angles.

The next-generation Hyundai sedan is rumored to be a bit of a retro-futuristic design. As far as we can see on this camouflaged prototype, that very flat roof could point to something a bit retro. (Something the illustration doesn’t truly show.) And again, unfortunately, the next Elantra will be another fake hatchback. A fast back car with a small, regular trunk opening. So far, the new design, or what we can see of it under all that camouflage, has been pretty controversial.

The current generation Hyundai Elantra came out back in 2020. It received a “mid-cycle facelift” about 2 years ago. The new generation is rumored to come sometime next year.

Over the years, the Elantra has become and very modern-looking sedan. There is now a rumor from Korea about the next generation’s design being influenced by some past models. Which I really hope won’t happen. I really cannot think of a super great-looking Elantra from many generations ago. The Elantra has evolved into a very nice-looking modern sedan. It wasn’t that long ago.

The Elantra will be a very important car for Hyundai since, by that time, the Sonata could be gone. And will not be replaced, at least in the US. The new Elantra could even grow a little bit in order to replace both models. It will probably also end up being Hyundai’s last ICE sedan. Since they are one of the most aggressive EV brands in the world, they already offer an almost full portfolio of electric models.

The new car is also rumored to keep the current generation’s platform, which makes sense. It’s been a trend for the past couple of years for most manufacturers who have been spending most of their R&D money on EVs.

By 2027, the new Elantra could also be a hybrid-only model or even a PHEV. By then, there will also be a new Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and both of these could have a standard EV powertrain.

The last ICE Elantra could turn out to be quite an interesting new car…

  1. I’m not a fan of the current generation, but I do see them out and about everywhere.

The fifth generation Elantra was the best looking generation! If Hyundai wishes to go “retro”, then the fifth generation would definitely be the version I would reference.

So far, this next gen design doesn’t look promising and has me a little concerned on how it will look (especially considering how repulsive its Kia K4 platform mate looks). I’m holding out hope that Hyundai will prove me wrong and pleasantly surprise me when this vehicle is fully revealed.
