New Honda HR-V coming for the 2028 model year.

A new generation Honda HR-V is rumored to be introduced in 2027, as a 2028 model year. Which would be, about a year after the new Honda Civic. And before the next generation Hondda CR-V.

The next HR-V is also rumored to use the e-HEV 1.5 Liter Hybrid engine. Which woul dbe similar to the new Honda Civic, and give the small crossover a major boost in power.

In my uninformed and unprofessional opinion, the current HR-V is a weird-looking car. One that doesn’t look at all like any other Honda models sold in the US. I remember posting some photos of a camouflaged prototype I saw in my neighborhood months before the car came out, and almost no one was guessing it was the next HR-V. A new Ford or Mazda was the most popular guess.

The illustration above shows a next-generation H-RV that would look more like other Honda designs. Something also not as lumpy-looking as the current generation. I test drove the H-RV when it came out and came out pretty impressed. This is a very nice, affordable car. But that design is hard to swallow for many. I think something more attractive would make the H-RV even more popular.

The total lack of a Hybrid trim is also a big mistake. One that Honda chose not to correct during the life of this generation for some reason. I guess the next model will offer some kind of electrification.

However, just like all “new” gas cars these days, it will probably be based on the current platform. Since most research and development money is going to EVs and new battery tech.

  1. Anything would be an improvement style wise over the current car. The first generation HR-V was cute.

  2. The current generation is way too sluggish, if it had decent pickup I would’ve bought it when I test-drove it. The front of the mock-up reminds me of the asian market version of the current HRV which is smaller than the U.S.’s. The back reminds me of the current CR-V so this mockup is just dated parts photoshopped together.

  3. What the HRV needs is the detuned 2.0L hybrid that’s available in the rest of the world as the ZRV, some additional sound proofing and lumbar support (for top trims), and a little front/rear updating. Honda could get another 3-4 years out of the current design and that’s what Honda needs at the moment. Less development costs going while they get their EV up and in production over the next year.
