Lincoln should really think about a “” based Town Car.

Lincoln should really be thinking about a new luxury sedan these days. Without expecting huge numbers. Something based on Ford’s upcoming new “universal EV platform” would help a great deal with keeping cost down. And they wouldn’t need to sell hundreds of thousands of them. Plus, I’m sure the Chinese would absorb most of them anyway.

Even Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, mentioned the possibility a few months ago. “I don’t think we want to make an affordable hybrid as a Lincoln, but an affordable EV Lincoln, with over-the-top color choice and over-the-top interior customization would make sense,” is what he said last August. I agree, except for the “over-the-top color choice and over-the-top interior customization ” bit, which does not sound affordable at all.

For decades, the Town Car was everywhere. And the Navigator, with only 17,500 sold last year, has never really been as popular.

The name was first used in 1959 and 1960 as a luxury trim for the Lincoln Continental. And then used again as an option package a few years later. But the one we all know started life in 1981. It was an option on the 1980 Continental and became its own model in 1981. It was quite popular with sales going up to over 201,000 units in 1988 alone!

A second generation was produced from 1990 to 1997. A third generation came out in late 1997, produced until 2011.

We are supposed to see up to 8 brand new models based on that new Ford platform. Let’s hope one or two are scheduled for Lincoln…

  1. I think Lincoln gets outsize attention here. Virtually nobody wants Lincoln to return to 1970s vibes, but I agree from a styling and content perspective it would be cool.

  2. Only if Ford is willing to make a massive beast of a car. The last Continental was too small
