Should the Cadillac Eldorado make a comeback?

If GM decided to show us a new Cadillac Eldorado, it really should include some retro vibes. And not trying to be some futuristic egg shape blob. The Eldorado was big and in charge, something that shouldn’t change.

As far as we know, Cadillac has been working on two new EV sedans. These will be replacing the aging CT4 and CT5. And, according to GM design director Brian Smith, we might see one of these “soon”. However, since these rumors, Cadillac has announced a next generation CT5 sedan. The new car will have a gas engine and might just be a rebodied version of the current model.

What they are not working on, at least officially, is a new 2-door Eldorado coupe. So far, the Solei Concept from last year is the closest thing to a new Eldorado. Something that, if ever produced, would be even more expensive than the $400,000 Celestiq. The last thing Cadillac needs.

A “real” new Eldorado would have to be much, much less expensive, and could most likely be based on one of the 2 new sedans. Or the next-generation CT5. Since they now cover pretty much every single SUV segment known to man with the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ. They can’t really come up with something cheaper than the Optic as a luxury brand. The only new models they can come up with in the near future are sedans. Or maybe even a coupe.

So why not a cool, large, and old-fashioned coupe like an Eldorado?

Like many famous Cadillac models, the Eldorado started life in the 1950s. Back when American luxury cars were insanely large and heavy. But also the envy of car fans all around the world. These were days long before Mercedes or even BMW were popular, especially in the US. Also, these giant chariots were barely getting 10MPG.

The Eldorado started shrinking for its 10th generation in 1979, but still looked great and quite imposing. However, by 1986, the much smaller 11th generation just looked ridiculous. By then, it seems Cadillac in general was quite lost.

Cadillac was working on a new, beautiful coupe a few years ago, which ended up being a concept they only showed a few months ago. Like it, they were ashamed of it. Or maybe the opposite, it looked so good it made the current CT5 sedan look even worse.

  1. Beautiful. If only. Perfect color, however the trunk lid could use a bit more detail. Also no EV! They are not the way.

  2. Cadillac needs to really move back to it’s origins as a true luxury brand like Rolls Royce.
There may not be the money to do it, but they would be moving into a space that has a growing client base and would give more space to other GMC brands to develop into.
This car would fit that plan.
