Ford’s all-new “car” for 2028.

According to Ford, the brand will soon offer 5 new models starting under $40,000 before 2030, which isn’t that cheap in the first place. As many new cars still start at under $40,000, including very popular ones. Like the Toyota RAV4 and Camry, and many, many others. That base price doesn’t seem like such an amazing achievement. Unless Ford is talking about new EVs.
We already know one of these all-new models (not redesigned versions of existing cars or trucks) will be the new $30,000 pickup. That could mean most of these could be based on the new Universal EV platform. However, Ford also mentioned “multi-energy”. Which could mean more REV models as well. “It will be across our lineup of cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, and it will be multi-energy,” is the official word.
Ford mentioned the new lineup will include “cars”. Which is quite vague, but let’s see what these new non-SUV/truck things could be.
The illustrations above show 2 new sedans. One looks like a modern version of the Fusion. The other being a retro design influenced by older Fords from the early 1960’s. Which I think could be pretty cool.

Some people are already expecting a new Focus or even a Fiesta. The Fiesta is scheduled to return in Europe sometime next year. But it will be based on a Renault model. That probably means “no US sales”. Something larger and a bit higher, like the one shown above, would have a better chance over here.

And how about a wagon? The 2 illustrations above show 2 very different takes on the idea of a new Ford Station wagon. And both have retro exterior wood trim. (why not…) The top one is a more modern design that wouldn’t be out of place next to a Mustang Mach-E. The second one is a more compact retro-looking, and more fun compact wagon. You know, something for the kids…

Last year, Ford mentioned it would concentrate its efforts on the Mustang and Bronco brands. The current Mustang Mach-E was originally scheduled to stop production in June this year. And be replaced by a second generation with a coupe body style added. That seems to have changed, and who knows when or if the Mach-e will ever be redesigned.
The top image shows a 2nd generation Mach-e. While the one below it shows a 4-door sedan with Mustang design cues. Which is something Ford has been hinting at recently. Even mentioning a new RWD sedan. As Kim Farley did last December: “Should Ford do a rear-wheel drive, high-performance, affordable sedan with a really cool closure system in the back so you can carry a lot of stuff, as an all-electric [vehicle]?’ That’s the way I’m thinking about the sedan.”

I personally think that Ford will include a very modern new sedan into the mix. Something that could be influenced by the Chinese Xiaomy SU7, since it seems to be Ford’s CEO Jim Farley’s favorite car these days. And you know he must have pushed his team to work on something similar. It’s also exactly what he described in December: “RWD, High performance, cool closure system in the back.” Which is a weird, convoluted way to describe a hatchback.
Something based on the new platform could easily be sold for under $40,000. Even as an EV.
There have also been rumors of talks between Ford and Xiaomi last week. Both companies have denied that Ford would build Xiaomi products in the US. But they could be working on many other things. Including a second-generation Xiaomi sedan. Something that could be a Ford model over here. ..
Who knows….
