Next-generation VW ID.4 coming in 2027.

Volkswagen is already planning a major redesign for the next-generation Volkswagen ID.4, even though the 2025 model just received updates in the U.S. The new version, expected for the 2027 model year, will reportedly feature a completely redesigned exterior, a new interior, and the return of physical controls. According to Volkswagen leadership, the upcoming ID.4 will be a “huge step up” compared with the current model.
The current VW ID.4 received a few major changes for the 2025 model year in the US. But it will still be redesigned completely for the 2027 model year. Inside and out. The top illustration above suggests a redesign that would turn the ID.4 into a larger ID. Cross. Which would be a great idea, especially since the compact electric SUV segment keeps growing rapidly in the US and worldwide.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer recently mentioned: “We’ll re-do the ID.4 completely inside and out. It will be a completely different car, a huge step up”. That is a pretty strong statement for a model that is already one of Volkswagen’s best-selling electric vehicles globally. It also suggests VW understands the importance of keeping the ID.4 competitive as more electric SUVs arrive from rivals like Hyundai, Kia and Ford. (Not Honda as we just found out…)
The next-generation model could also grow slightly in size and adopt a slightly more rugged design language similar to the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Cross. That would make the vehicle look more like a traditional SUV and less like a rounded crossover. Many buyers still prefer a more upright, bold design, especially in the US market where SUVs dominate sales.
There will be more changes inside with a heavily redesigned interior. It will include an all-new dashboard. Hopefully something more like the new ID. Cross. VW also claims buttons will finally return. At least some. Like a volume knob. It will probably be a row of switches under the center screen, similar to what is in the ID. Cross.
That would be a welcome change. One of the biggest complaints about current VW EVs has been the heavy reliance on touch controls. Many owners and reviewers have criticized the sliders and touch panels for being hard to use while driving.
“We’re going to bring back a round knob for the volume control,” an insider said, adding: “If you develop something that works, and it has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it.” That’s the official word from the very same company that replaced their buttons with sliders on a screen. Clearly, Volkswagen has been listening to customer feedback.
It seems motors and batteries will again be improved as well. These changes will come first to the older Volkswagen ID.3 sold in Europe early next year. While the ID.4 will be revised later that same year. Expect improvements in efficiency, range, and possibly faster charging speeds as VW continues to refine its electric platform.
Battery technology and software updates are evolving quickly, and Volkswagen will need these improvements to stay competitive with newer EV platforms. A modest increase in range alone could make the next ID.4 much more appealing to buyers who are still hesitant about electric vehicles.
I personally think the Volkswagen ID.4 still looks pretty good. Small improvements outside and more changes inside would probably make it an even more attractive EV. The current design has aged quite well compared to many competitors, and a careful evolution rather than a radical change might actually be the smartest move.
Let’s hope all these changes come to the US version as well. If Volkswagen really delivers a better interior, improved technology, and a slightly more rugged design, the next-generation ID.4 could easily become one of the most compelling electric SUVs in its class.
Would you prefer a redesigned ID.4 that looks more like an SUV, or do you like the current design better?
