Next-Gen BMW X5 spotted in Los Angeles. Early look at 2027 redesign

This prototype was spotted in Los Angeles a few days ago. And it strongly suggests we’re looking at the next-generation BMW X5. The test vehicle was heavily camouflaged, but already looks pretty familiar. We’ve also seen many spy shots of the next BMW X5 already, so this not a huge surprise.

The current fourth-generation model debuted in June 2018, and after nearly eight years on the market, it’s clearly time for a full redesign. This upcoming version is expected to adopt BMW’s new “Neue Klasse” design language. Which emphasizes cleaner surfaces, slimmer lighting signatures, and a much cleaner overall appearance. As a result, the new X5 will likely resemble a larger version of the BMW iX3. Or even the “soon to be revised”  BMW X3. Which is also set to receive similar styling updates in the near future.

BMW is, as usual, determined and in a hurry to standardize the look of its lineup. The redesigned BMW X7 will follow the same design philosophy, as will the BMW 5 Series. This unified design approach should make the brand more instantly recognizable. Though some enthusiasts may miss the more distinct styling differences between models.

The new X5 is expected to arrive as a 2027 model, with production reportedly starting in August. That timing suggests an official reveal could happen within the next few months. From what we can see so far, the overall silhouette doesn’t appear dramatically different from today’s model. Instead, BMW seems to be focusing on evolving the design rather than completely reinventing it, with the most noticeable changes concentrated at the front and rear.

Inside, the cabin will likely take heavy inspiration from the new iX3, featuring an almost minimalist layout, large digital displays, and BMW’s latest iDrive interface. Improved materials, cheesy ambient lighting, and advanced driver-assistance systems are also expected to play a major role in “modernizing” the interior experience.

As for powertrains, they’re expected to remain largely similar to the current model, including turbocharged gasoline and hybrid options. However, a fully electric variant will join the lineup, aligning the X5 with BMW’s broader electrification strategy and giving it a direct competitor in the growing luxury EV SUV segment.

There’s also ongoing discussion about a hydrogen-powered version. Like most hydrogen vehicles, it would likely be a limited-run experiment, more of a technological showcase than a mainstream offering. While intriguing, it’s unlikely to have a significant impact on overall sales, serving instead as a glimpse into potential future alternatives.
