New Toyota Compact Pickup Spotted.

There have been rumors about an all-new compact Toyota pickup for years now. One that would be based on the next-generation Corolla or Corolla Cross. Well, it seems the wait may finally be over soon…

The prototype above was caught testing in Brazil, a market where small unibody pickups like these are extremely popular and offered by several manufacturers. Models such as the Fiat Strada, Chevrolet Montana, Renault Oroch, and Volkswagen Saveiro have long dominated the segment. These are vehicles we don’t currently get in North America, but Toyota appears to be developing something that could eventually have a much broader appeal.

In fact, Toyota has reportedly been considering a smaller pickup for the U.S. market for quite some time. A model designed to compete directly with the hugely successful Ford Maverick. If that’s the plan, the truck seen here could be exactly what Toyota needs. It would provide a more affordable and fuel-efficient alternative to the larger Tacoma while attracting buyers who simply need a practical daily driver with an open cargo bed. Many customers never require a traditional body-on-frame truck and are looking for something easier to drive, easier to park, and much more economical to own.

The timing also makes a lot of sense. Toyota has been watching from the sidelines while Ford has enjoyed tremendous success, and it would be surprising if the company didn’t want a piece of that market.

Being based on a front-wheel-drive platform, we’re obviously not talking about a hardcore off-road truck here. But that’s also true of the Maverick, which has proven that many buyers are more interested in versatility, efficiency, and value than extreme off-road capability. An optional AWD version would still be possible, just as Ford offers on higher Maverick trims. Toyota could also develop a more rugged trim level with increased ground clearance and additional styling enhancements (more black plastic crap) to attract adventure-minded buyers.

And since this is a Toyota, there’s a very good chance a hybrid powertrain would be available from day one. That would allow Toyota to immediately challenge the Maverick Hybrid while also delivering the excellent fuel economy buyers now expect from smaller trucks. A plug-in hybrid version could even be a possibility. Especially as Toyota continues expanding its electrified lineup around the world.

However, when you compare the front end of the prototype to the current facelifted Corolla Cross, the similarities are hard to ignore. The headlights, proportions, and overall design appear very close to today’s model. That could mean this new pickup is actually based on the current Corolla Cross architecture rather than the next-generation version that has been rumored.

If that’s the case, it’s a somewhat surprising decision. The current Corolla Cross debuted globally in 2020 and arrived in the U.S. for the 2022 model year. By the time this new pickup reaches production, the platform could already be approaching the end of its lifecycle. Unless, of course, Toyota plans a substantial update underneath the familiar sheet metal, including revised suspension tuning, improved technology, and a more advanced hybrid system.

Another possibility is that Toyota is using existing Corolla Cross components simply to speed up development and keep costs under control. Sharing parts with an already successful crossover would allow the company to bring the truck to market more quickly while maximizing profitability.

Either way, a compact Toyota pickup aimed squarely at the Ford Maverick sounds like exactly the kind of vehicle many buyers have been asking for. If Toyota combines its reputation for reliability with a competitive price, strong fuel economy, and a practical interior, this new truck could become one of the most important new Toyota models of the decade. It may not replace the Tacoma, but it could attract an entirely new group of customers to the brand.
