A Corvette SUV Could Be GM’s Most Controversial Vehicle Yet.

Something like this would truly be the uptimate automotive blasphemy for many hard core Chevrolet Corvette fans. And yet, there has been rumors of a Corvette SUV for a few years now. At one time, it was even mentioned that a new, raised-up 4-door model with a Corvette name would be based on the Ultium platform. Like pretty much everything GM was planning back then. That of course never happened. There were even rumors of a whole Corvette sub-brand for a while.

GM has changed course with EVs lately, and mentioned that PHEV models would be available “soon”. Like a PHEV version of the Chevrolet Equinox already on sale in China. That was almost two years ago and still nothing in the US. Later, it announced the next-generation gas Cadillac XT5 would come to the US. A model that actually came out in China, and is now even available with a PHEV powertrain. Again, nothing here. More recently, we’ve even heard that the Cadillac CT5 sedan would see another generation. One with a gas powertrain. (Which makes you wonder what happened to the 2 Cadillac EV sedans GM has been working on for the past few years.)

We haven’t heard of a Corvette SUV for a while. That could mean it has either been canceled or switched to a gas platform. Which would make sense for the older Corvette fans. A Corvette SUV could be marketed as a much cheaper option to the Lamborghini Urus. One that could be as loud and obnoxious for a fraction of the price.

Of course, something like this could never actually be based on the mid-engine Corvette. Since Cadillac is using an updated version of the GM Alpha platform, it doesn’t seem that hard to design a Corvette SUV on top of it. The CT5 is already using the 6.2 Liter Supercharged V8 on the V-Blackwing trim. Which would be the perfect top-of-the-line powertrain for a Corvette SUV?

The lure of huge profit margins will be very hard for GM to resist. Even if something like this doesn’t last that long in the quickly changing automotive landscape. They wouldn’t need to sell that many to make some quick money.
