Cadillac Needs to Bring Back the Eldorado as a Stunning Luxury Coupe.

Cadillac is down to just one car that isn’t an SUV: the CT5 sedan. While a second generation of that model is on its way, there don’t seem to be any plans for a new 2-door coupe. A new Eldorado luxury coupe would be a spectacular way for Cadillac to reinvent itself. In a world of a very long and narrow new Jaguar sedan, a retro-futuristic Eldorado would not be out of place.

Recent Cadillac models have all been SUVs. (Except for the Celesitiq, a car almost no one has seen yet). An all-new sedan will, of course, be quite refreshing. However, I really think it is time for a new design language for the famous luxury brand. Or have at least one model that stands out by using a few classic retro Cadillac design cues.

While the CT5 could sell in decent numbers, at least for a while, a new coupe could be an interesting and intriguing retro-looking Cadillac.

For many years, 2 door Cadillacs were actually more popular than their sedans. Even the larger DeVille models sold better as 2-door coupes than 4-door sedans. These days are long gone.

The Ultium EV platform is doing great for Cadillac. With the Lyriq is quickly becoming their second most popular model behind the Escalade. But a true 2-door coupe using the legendary Eldorado name would be even better. Even if not as popular as the new sedan it would be based on.

Mercedes is still making a luxury coupe. Just one. The new CLE is available as a coupe or convertible. But it’s a smallish car that isn’t that impressive in person. And pretty invisible.

I think Cadillac could easily come up with a new large coupe, much larger than the CLE. Something expensive but not competing against Bentley or Rolls. Unlike the misguided Celestiq. And something retro. I am pretty sure these old Cadillac design cues could work on a very modern car.

Jaguar has just shocked the automotive world with its new Type 01 sedan. Cadillac wouldn’t have to go as crazy for a new Eldorado.

There probably isn’t a real market for a new Eldorado anymore. Which is really too bad…
