VW ID.Tiguan Replaces the ID.4

VW has finally released the new ID.Tiguan. Which is the ID.4 replacement. It was, for the past few years, described as a “facelift”, but it seems much more. Since it looks totally different from the good old ID.4.
The ID.4 was introduced in late 2020, 6 years ago. However, it took VW over a year to bring it over here. Sales in the US went up until 2023, with over 37,000 of them sold that year. However, that got slashed in half for 2024. (And probably down to almost nothing now).
Worldwide, it has been another story, with up to 182,000 sold in 2024. And still over 163,000 last year.
After seeing the images above, I still think the ID.4 was a bit more stylish than its replacement. The ID. Tiguan is trying very hard to look like the Tiguan and any other VW SUVs. Which I guess is the point. 6 years ago, EVs wanted to stand out; now they want to blend in.
Things look more upscale inside, and again, more traditional. And a lot like the regular Tiguan. With such a “thick” dashbaord, they could have incorporated the center screeen into the dashboard, but again, we get the tablet that seems to be showing up out of nowhere. Which is too bad. It could have looked so much better. At least the new 15-inch screen has a row of buttons underneath.
The new model is finally getting a one-pedal driving feature. Something all EVs should have. 2 batteries are available, 58-kWh and 77-kWh. At least in Europe.
The new ID. Tiguan is expected to be rated at around 320 miles in the US. VW mentions it is still scheduled to come here. But really, who knows with such low sales numbers. They even pushed the ID. Buzz comeback to 2028. So really, I’m not even sure anyone at VW knows for sure what they’re doing.
Let’s hope it will be a bit more reliable. I’ve been reading a lot about problems, issues, and recalls about the ID.4. They’re even a brand new recall this week asking owners not to charge over 80%. You would think that after 6 years they would have figured things out, but no.
Good luck, VW…
