2022 Kia Sportage: official teasers…

Last Updated:

Well, well, well…
We finally get to see something official about the all-new Kia Sportage for 2022. After about 18 years of spy shots.
And the real thing looks much better than any of the weirdo illustrations I have seen so far.
The interior seems really nice too! And it even looks quite upscale.
It seems Kia is playing the same game as Mazda these days. The new Sportage could offer quality closer to an upscale brand. Although, unlike Mazda, they will stick to the FWD platform and engines from the Hyundai Tucson. (Mazda is coming up with an all-new RWD platform and inline 6 cylinder engine for the CX-50)
I think all the Mazda efforts might only be noticed by a few. While the Sportage could mimick just enough of true luxury to wow crowds.
We’ll see…

  1. About damn time!!

Yeah I cant wait to see this and the Mazda comparison.

I agree it looks way better than them 101 different teasers.

  2. Also it's about time they got rid of that outdated greenhouse. That last generation Sportage carried that greenhouse from the 2007 Kia Kue Concept and Kia KND-4. That makes that greenhouse 14 years old. That's how outdated that last generation Sportage was.

  3. Vince, you are so right. The traditional premium brands have to watch out for both KIA and Hyundai in the next few years. Their quality is becoming excellent, while the trads are becoming less so, (just look at the lower end BMW or Mercs). The group are actually focusing on branding rather than quality differentials. Genesis is the nominal premium brand, but I see it as the 'classic' brand, Hyundai as the 'Techno' brand and KIA developing into a 'Sports' brand.

  4. Disappointed in the exterior… Sportage has lost its unique character in both the D-pillar and front grill.

Now looks like every other new CUV….albeit better than the new Tuscon with the horrendous side creases.

    I own a 2021 Sportage, preceded by a 2013, preceded by a 2011.

    Interior looks cool however.

BUT sad to be losing the exterior design language of Peter Schreyer.

  5. The outside and interior might be OK in person, BUT, the anemic engine will not compare to even the outdated but flawless six speed Mazda in the CX5.

I already know that I won't like the Sportage because it is likely that it'll be using the same 2.5 Engine, 8 speed automatic with 187 HP that the 2022 Hyundai Tucson is using, sad, really sad.
I drove the 2022 Tucson and I was really disappointed on the drive. The 8 speed gears were all over the place and downshifting. I wish the had kept the 1.6 Turbo with a decent tranny.

So I traded a 2021 Rav4 for a 2021 Mazda CX5 GT. I'm waiting for the CX50 so my CX5 will do for the next 2-3 years till the CX50 arrives. The new CRV will be out on the fall and there will be more competition.
My current CX5 is flawless, nice 10 inch screen, etc. I wish Mazda have started using an 8 or even a 10 speed tranny for better fuel economy, but hey, the six speed is paired nicely with the engine.
The current Rav4 is nice looking and decent fuel economy but the interior is so cheap, and the road noise is awful too. I believe that Toyota relies on their powertrain reliability. They don't care, they don't need to spend money on better radios (I spent $32K on a EXL Premium with a piece od S#it radio) You got to see the cheap looking and horrible radio system.
I'm not saying that Mazda is superior but the insolation, driving enjoyment and decent radio made my purchase easier.

I hope the Sportage uses the 1.6 Turbo engine not the same powertrain that Hyunda is using on the 2022 Tucson.

Vince, thanks for a great website, lots of really great information on vehicles for people like myself that love cars. Keep up the great work.

  6. I've seen really good reviews of the Tucson Hybrid. Not only does it get much better mileage, but apparently, the more powerful powertrain is also much smoother. 7 speed DSG as well.
Around 180/190 hp is what 99% of buyers are OK with. I'm sure that's why everyone is offering this on everything… ("good enough" is what most people want )

    Thanks for the kind words!!!

  7. I already like this better than the Tuscon on account of the round wheel arches. That curved glass expansive screen could really look good in person. Looking forward to the official unveiling.

  8. Not sure anyone pays that much attention to the greenhouse…

Also not sure people pick their car from the awards it did or did not win. This isn't the Oscars.

And many greenhouse designs last for years and years. Like the one on the Porsche 911, Jeep Wrangler. And many others like most BMW SUVs. Or Mercedes sedans.
There seems to be a weird (and maybe unhealthy) "Greenhouse obsession" here…

  9. You actually liked.that outdated greenhouse from the.2007 Kia KND-4 concept? That greenhouse is 12 years old. What awards have that Sportage won lately the last 4 years of that outdated greenhouse?

  10. If people dont pay that much attention to the greenhouse then why is it every generation Sorento had a different greenhouse?

Too bad it didnt work for years on the Sportage though. It made that thing look like it was 12 years old. The fact Kia actually redesigned the greenhouse proves my point.
