Lexus GX 460: “Do not buy”.
Last Updated:
That’s what Consumer Report is advising its readers.
After testing the big Lexus SUV.
“When pushed to its limits on a handling course on CR’s test track, the rear of the GX CR purchased slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control”
Well, duh.
Just look at that thing.
Not only it is one of the ugliest object you can buy at any price, but it just looks like it’s ready to roll over.
Another “too tall for how wide it is” truck on the road.
No Surprises here…, Narrow, tall, = tippy. We are no longer surprised to hear unsafe and toyota in the same comment. I would run far from any toyota dealership for a couple of years at the very least. There are sooooo many great car companies out there that aren't allegedly hiding safety info. Go Get a nice Mazda, Nissan, Honda or VW.
What about the nasty looking 4-runner? Isn't that based on the same platform as this awful looking vehicle?
LOL, or is it because they have major egg on their face with the recent toyota meltdown? Toyota has been a favorite of CR, oh now toyota has it problems, CR has to now act like they actually look at the vehicles they produce, god forbid. CR bird cage liner.
WoW all of a sudden Consumer Reports magazine is coming to the rescue, where were they 8 million ago.
just heard on TV News that Lexus is SUSPENDING SALES of the GX460
…sounds to me like even TM thinks their vehicles could well be defective
…also sounds to me like TM doesn't know what the heck they're doing!!!
consumer reports is oblivious to the fact that people should drive cars, not electronics. It may have been driver input that made the car go wrong in the first place, but why would you rely on the electronics of the car (especially one of this size and weight) to bring it back in control? i understand the benefit of having stability control to maintain slippage but i would never fully entrust them to accident prevention. instead of buying ventilated leather seats why not spend that money on some driving lessons?
PS i just traded my old prado (less fancy version of the GX) for a new one and find that it's actually easier to control (maybe even sportier), if a little bit less easy on the eyes
I'm surprised the older GX470 didn't have the same rollover warning. The older GX looks even higher and narrower than the new one.
The 4Runners are about 1-2" lower than the GXs.
Toyota salesmen are the most arrogant I have ever seen.
Their interior(Toyotas) is so boring and now their safety is in question.
I rather get a Hyunday or Honda than a Toyota.
Burn baby burn….:)
This biggest danger with this vehicle is merely looking at it.
Ugly? Coming from someone who thinks Peugeots are great looking is pretty funny.
My my my how the tables are turning. Korea's big three (Hyundai, Kia, Daewoo) verses Japan's big three (Toyota, Honda, Nissan). Neither Korean or Japenese cars are like they used to be. Good for Korea bad for Japan. So the Kia Borrego is better?
If Toyota is that bad though, why is it that I see them every .05 of a second on the road?

You are an idiot for many reasons, but please let me help explain some things to you.
1. I am an instructor at Summit Point. I can tell you without a doubt this could very easily happen in real life. An off camber turn where a soccer mom misjudges the speed and lets off the gas. That rear end is going to swap places with the front in a hurry sending herself and her kids into an oncoming lane, the guardrail, or into the woods.
2. Most people can't drive to save their lives so this is a common occurance. Why do you think ESC will be federally mandated in 2012?
well "instructor", of course it can happen!!! but are yuo serious, imply that all others that high center gravity and specially weight handled that kind of sitution without skid??
i think any car that size is just in the edge off physiscs driven like that, no matter how fanatic towards or agains some carmanufaturer or country yuo are
If Toyota is that bad though, why is it that I see them every .05 of a second on the road?
Yea, and if a Big Mac, large fry, & a shake were really less healthy than veggies & nuts then how come there are so many McDonalds all over the place???–SO THERE!!!
WTF is wrong with Toyota these days?
"If Toyota is that bad though, why is it that I see them every .05 of a second on the road?"
Because they used to be a decent car company. A great one actually, back in the 80s. They still provide some sense of confidence to those who can't forget how bad most other brands were back then. But while other carmakers have improved dramatically, Toyota has declined. Although we can thank Toyota for being the benchmark for other carmakers to achieve, there really is no reason to buy a Toyota anymore.
I'm glad people most people still want to by an every .05 of a seconding seeing Camry so that it's rivals can age less because they are rare. Like the Mailubu, 2011 Kia Optima and the Mazda6. I don't like being part of a crowd but to be apart. And with Toyota's quailty in not being like it used to be, I really know I can buy something that is more safe.
