2025 Mazda CX-5 EV?

Last Updated:

This is quite an odd one.

I am being told this is an “upcoming Mazda product”. The only new Mazda product I have heard of lately is their new EV for 2025. The new model is also rumored to be called CX-5. Effectively replacing the current generation Mazda CX-5.

However, the blurry photo seems to show something that would look more like a CX-30. It also seems the rear end looks a little bit like the new Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 than other models like the CX-5.

Mazda had mentioned the new EV would “use an existing nameplate”. Something most people believe will be the next CX-5 since the current generation came out back in 2017. But the smaller CX-30 is also far from new. It came out in late 2019 as a 2020 model and could be on schedule for a change next year as well.

It all depends if Mazda wants its first true EV in the US to be a smaller model or not.

it’s hard to tell much from the photo above, but we do know this new Mazda EV is indeed coming to the US next year. This means prototypes are probably being tested currently. And the smaller CX70/90 look does make sense.

We’ll see…

  1. Why do you think it looks like a CX-30? It could be the new CX-5, the front is using the same general design as the larger models. It would be a shame, and mistake, if they don’t try harder with the CX-5, take the designs to the next level. Don’t want a mini – CX-90

  2. The real question is not what it will look like… it will look like any other modern Mazda will small changes. The real question will be whether the CX5 grows in size. Mazda has been very resistant to the idea of model creep. When they’ve wanted a bigger vehicle, it becomes a different one, and that might be bcuz their traditional market has been to Asia and Europe where streets and spaces are smaller. Why that matters is it will tell whether they also increase the CX30 and the Mazda3 in dimensions. Those have pretty cramped spaces and if they wanted to grow that end of the business, they need slightly more space thats competitive with other compacts. Otherwise, I dont believe the next CX5 will be BEV. I would expect a range of drivetrains, including some electrification like the CX90/CX70. And maybe one BEV – kind of how BMW has approached the 5 series.

btw – i like the silver illustration. I really hope they dont do something stupid like make all kinds of technical excuses for putting a trailing link suspension in it, like they did with the Mazda3, CX30 and CX50. The whole explanation of natural head movement with bumps in the CX50 was 100% BS. It’s cost savings. That right there is a stupid VW kinda move. Put in an independent multi-link already, Mazda!

  3. That honestly looks more like a 2000s Mazda Tribute than anything they’ve been producing for the past decade. Very disappointing so far.
