Acura MDX EV.

Last Updated:

Acura has been in some trouble for a few years now. I personally think they make great cars and SUVs, but somehow they’re not attracting as many buyers as they should. Which is usually due to unpopular designs…

They just launched the all-new Acura ZDX SUV, based on GM’s Ultium platform. I drove it for a full week and was very impressed. However, not much more impressed than the much cheaper Honda Prologue ( I haven’t driven the GM Ultium models yet). And that’s its main problem.

While the Cadillac Lyriq has a completely different interior from its Chevrolet cousins, the ZDX interior feels a lot like the Prologue’s. It’s different but not better.

Honda is hard at work on their own EV platform and a production version of the 0 Series Sallon concept is due out late next year or in early 2026. But it seems the Acura models based on the platform might come out first.

We saw the impressive-looking Performance EV concept just a few days ago, and we already have a few bits of news concerning Acura’s future EV models. Of course, they will have the new compact ADX first, which is based on the Honda Civic/Acura Integra and will probably be a hybrid.

Later a production version of the Performance concept will come out as a replacement for the aging Acura RDX. Explaining why the RDX didn’t get more changes for 2025.

After the RDX EV, a larger 3-row EV will be available as well.

Apparently, the new Acura MDX EV was already shown at a dealer meeting a few weeks ago. And the ICE MDX will still be available alongside the new EV for a while.

Just like the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, these will probably all come with a standard NACS port which will make them much more convenient and desirable than most EVs available today. And prices after incentives will probably be pretty close to their ICE counterparts.

But leasing will actually be cheaper than the ICE models like it is today already.

I think this is a very good move from Acura.

  1. I agree that Acura makes great cars. But they’re always offstep in some way. Exterior gimmicks, interior’s not up to class, and then there’s a lack of tech comparable to the field….like giving up the edge on their Sport Hybrids. They can do better. But I think they’ll need to clean house in their design group before it gets better.

  2. THATS A BUICK (gotta have my Buick)

I agree 100% if I wasn’t a car buff like you and everybody else on this website and that car was driving behind me or Lil is driving. I would think it was a Buick that is a very sad and pathetic front end.

And yes, Honda and Acura are always five steps behind everyone else in Tech and looks. They are on completely different wave lengths, no cohesion between any models. All they seem to focus on is the reputation for the reliability, which yes we all like reliability; but we also like change and embrace moving forward. their interiors are all pathetic, not to mention the Honda Accord, which I cannot stand because the tail end is completely Lincoln.

  3. @Emmett – 100% agree. And, Honda could easily fix the Accord with small details front and rear. The tail light pattern of the Japanese HR-V would look great on the new Accord, and its foglights and front end could add some flair to the Accord’s otherwise blah face. Those changes and a parchment color interior where the color was more distributed across the cabin would make the Accord a winner against the Camry, in my eyes, and maybe keep people from straying to SUVs. I’m not sure anything is going to fix Acura. They’re too entrenched with a certain “culture” that won’t move off its penchance for gimmicky design.
