Chevrolet Nomad.

Last Updated:

Even if wagons are not the most popular body style these days, Chevrolet needs a new one. And why not call it a Nomad…

A new Chevrolet Nomad could be based on the new Equinox EV. Since this would make it quite affordable. With the current Equinox EV starting at under $35,000. Just imagine that, an affordable Ultium-based wagon with over 320 miles of range.

The Nomad started as a concept back in 1954. And it looked like a really cool 2 door Corvette wagon.

As you can see, the production version wasn’t based on the Corvette at all. And it became a 2 door wagon version of the mundane Chevrolet Bel Air. The name Nomad was used in 2 more generations of Chevrolet wagons. And even on a Chevy van in the 1970s.

They revived the name in 1979 for a prototype of a Chevrolet minivan based on the Chevrolet Citation that never became anything.

There was another concept in 1999, based this time on the Chevrolet Camaro platform.

The best one in my humble and unprofessional opinion was from 2004 and based on the Pontiac Solstice. I remember there were many talks and rumors of a production version, but nothing happened. Which was really too bad.

I think it’s time for another Chevrolet Nomad. GM showed a new Buick EV Wagon concept last year for the Chinese market. Alongside a new EV sedan, both looked very close to production. A Chevroelt version of this for the North American market could really work. They could even add a more off-road AWD version like the one pictured on top. Of course, it would have to have 4 doors since you know, people don’t seem to be buying 2 door vehicles anymore…

Or maybe not. GM seems happy with its multitude of SUVs these days.

  1. Minus EV, not a bad render. Rwd/awd V6 stick complements Camaro well, cost-cut the alpha chassis and broaden enthusiast reach.

  2. I absolutely love that 2004 version that was based on what later became the Pontiac Solstice. If it were available now, I would buy it in a heartbeat!
