Toyota Celica.

This illustration shows what a next-generation Toyota Celica might look like. It’s one that has huge doors and zero back seats, for some odd reason…

Last year, Toyota’s executive VP mentioned the company would make another Celica soon. Mr.Toyoda himself had mentioned a new Celica in 2023. Toyota is also rumored to be working on a sportier new MR2.

For decades, the Celica was a very popular model for Toyota in the US, with over 106,000 of them sold in 1986 alone. However, things dropped down to 29,000 in 1993. It went back in 2000 with 52,000 units but finally dropped down to around 3000 units 5 years later.

The 2-door car market has not improved since 2005. And I’m not sure why Toyota might not be inclined to develop another 2 door coup on top of the GR86. A car that has been far from popular so far.

Let’s hope that a new Celica if it ever comes out, keeps the true mission of the original by being a good-looking and affordable 4-seater coupe. Affordable would be the key here. Since it seems that’s what Honda will try to do with the new 2026 Prelude Hybrid.

Still, it’s actually good to see some new 2 door coupes out there. The new Charger came out last year. A new Prelude this year and maybe a new Celica next year. Something like this hasn’t happened in decades…
