Lincoln Continental Convertible.

Last Updated:

This is a look at what a next-generation Lincoln Continental convertible could look like. And yes, it has only two doors. While it might seem quite blasphemous to most classic Continental fans, it seems a new large 2-door convertible could still make sense in the 21st century.

Of course, there is not even a rumor that Lincoln is actually working on a new convertible. They’re probably not even working on a new Continental either.

Lincoln is currently trying hard to appeal to the Chinese market, where they already sell a sedan. But how about racing a big splash with a new large convertible?

The Lincoln Continental started life back in 1940, as a 2 door coupe and convertible. So a new 2-door model would still respect the Continental history. However, the car we mostly remember as a “Continental” is the 4th generation sedan produced from 1961 to 1969. While much more boring 5th generation produced from 1969 to 1979 became one of the most popular cars in 1970’s TV shows.

The convertible model was available right away from the 1961 model year. It became even a bit larger in 1966 and a glass rear window was added. 1967 was the final year for the convertible model with only about 2300 of them sold that year.

I say it’s time for Lincoln to go crazy and offer something that might have zero market at least in the US. Their sales numbers in China are dropping every year and they do need something a bit more spectacular than their current lineup of look-alike boxy SUVs if they want to stand out. Something like this might just be what Lincoln needs.

And yes, something with plenty of old fashion chrome…
