2025 Mazda CX-5.

The top image is, “alegedly”, the first photo of the next-generation Mazda CX-5 for 2026.
If real, it doesn’t look like good news to me. Just another proof that Mazda seems to be stuck in a design rot, and is having a hard time getting out of it. The Mazda CX-50 was an almost refreshing take on the CX-5. But these new CX-60/CX-70/CX80/CX90 all look like they came out 10 years ago. There is also no difference between the North American and European models.
The idea of selling 2 SUVS that are exactly the same except for 5 or 7-passenger capacity (CX-70 and CX-90) for the exact same price in the US is also pretty insane.
This “new” CX-5 looks almost exactly the same as the current, 9-year-old model. And it’s pretty sad.
Of course, it’s probably not the same car. You can already see a few differences. However, these are so minute that only current owners will notice. Even if Mazda claims an all-new design.
That front end with the big grille has to go. Something new has to replace it after all these years on all Mazda designs except the Miata.
I just cannot imagine this design luring new customers into a Mazda showroom if they were not interested in the current model.
The big news will be the new Hybrid powertrain. Which, for some odd reason, will be an in-house unit and not the Toyota one used in the CX-50 Hybrid. That also seems like a lot of money wasted.
I think Mazda is great and deserves much better than this.
