Buick Electra L7.

Buick has officially launched the production versions of the all-new Electra L7 sedan in China. And we have more info and more photos.

As previously mentioned, I think the new sedan looks great. A very modern design with a very nice Buick “face,” and it all comes together very nicely. However, that fastback rear end should really hide a proper hatchback, and not one of these ridiculous tiny trunk openings….

The interior also seems like a great place to spend time. Although I still prefer Buick‘s current wide screen shape over that Tesla wannabe center unit.

The official photos and fantastically cheesy. Showing what GM thinks “cool” means for the Chinese market. I guess parking in the middle of the street in front af an empty wannabe French cafe is considered cool by the locals, and so is waiting a few hours for your husband/boyfriend in the car while he’s painting something unrelated to what’s in front of him. I guess that’s cool too.

The new Electra L7 is not a small car and is about the size of a Tesla Model S. It is based on a new platform called “Xiao Yao” and is available with FWD, RWD, or AWD. It is powered by a 1.5 Liter Turbo engine producing 154HP. The engine serves as a generator for the 40 kWh battery. Just like in the good old Chevrolet Volt. The electric motor produces around 240HP with a total range of 870 miles and an EV-only range of almost 190 miles.

I don’t know about you, but I think something like this would have a market over here as well. I guess GM did their research and will claim there is no market for such a cool sedan from Buick in North America.

Which is really too bad…

  1. Buick in the U.S. needs to gain a more solid brand position. Other than the small SUVs from Korea and a couple of full size models, most buyers don’t put Buick on their list of vehicles to check out when shopping. Until the brand carves out a more definitive market position, it is going to remain a minor blur in a sea of better options.

  2. Buick lost its differentiation from the other GM brands when they went to the current design language, which I call CAT FACE. Its generic like a Hyundai and lost the premium pretentions with that change because they no longer look expensive. But I don’t think GM really cares. Its cars are for Chevy and Caddy and Buick is just a gap filler at this point until those two squeeze it out.
