2028 RAM SUV.

Last Updated:

Stellantis is mentioning yet another new model that is about 3 years away. This time, we are being told the RAM truck brand will be getting a new SUV in 2028.

Again, anything can happen between now and 2028, especially with a group like Stellantis. A company that is currently not doing well at all. With rumors of being bought or taken over every few weeks or so. I guess putting out news like this is a way to calm down investors and dealers.

The RAM brand was created back when Sergio Marchionne tried to get rid of the Dodge brand, but still wanted to sell the very profitable Dodge trucks. I personally think Dodge trucks are a much better name than RAM, but here we are. Now RAM will finally get a proper SUV in at least 3 years.

There have been many rumors for many years of a Dodge or RAM SUV based on the RAM 1500 trucks. Then rumors switched to a RAM SUV based on the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It now looks like the big RAM SUV will indeed be based on the next-generation Jeep Wagoneer. It will be a giant SUV competing against the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Ford Expedition. All in one.

It will also probably be a bit cheaper than the Jeep version. Which now starts at $65,000. A Chevrolet Tahoe starts at around $61,000 these days.

This will not be an EV. It will be offered with good old-fashioned gas engines. Probably the inline 6 cylinder turbo and the Hemi V8. But a range extender version will also be available. Something the Jeep Grand Wagoneer already offers for the 2026 model year.

Since the Grand Wagoneer is based on the RAM 1500 chassis, it doesn’t seem like the RAM SUV will be another STLA-based model. However, there is a rumor about the next-generation Grand Wagoneer switching to the new platform for its next generation. Something that probably dates back to when Stelantis was going to be an all-EV company.

Who really knows what’s going on now?

All I know is, again, that 2028 is a long time from now in the automotive world. By that time, EVs might be more popular than ever, and the new RAM will really feel old-fashioned and behind the times.

However, it seems there will always be a market in North America for these huge gas-guzzling SUVs. Even if it’s a shrinking one…

  1. I wonder if it will have the same issues and terrible build quality of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Probably, after all it is a Stellantis product.

  2. This, I’m looking forward to, and I would much rather see large, impressive SUVs than downsizing or humble econoboxes or appliances.

  3. The idiocy of Stellantis keeps on delivering. RAM was originally just an engine series within Dodge. Make it all Dodge. No more “RAM” brand. There!… problem solved. Thats how you reduce marketing costs. Everything consolidated, so they can stop diddling themselves over it and get a product that isn’t EV-based to market.
