No. The VW ID.Buzz is not dead in the US.

And yes, there will be no 2026 model year for the VW ID. Buzz in the US. After the news a few days ago, some already claimed the retro Minivan had been canceled for good in the US. Which is not true at all.

Of course, VW did cancel the ID.7 sedan last year. Which was probably not such a bad move after seeing sales numbers of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan. (Itself probably being canceled for 2026, except for the N trim).

But VW has a lot of unsold units of the ID. Buzz sitting at dealers and probably has enough to fill the next few months. According to VW’s US CEO, the ID. Buzz is not being canceled for the US market and will indeed return for the 2027 model year. Which will probably be less than a year from now.

I personally think the ID.Buzz might see some sort of facelift for the 2027 model year. The electric Minivan started deliveries in Europe in 2022. That’s already almost 4 years ago. At that time, only the shorter wheelbase with 5 seats was available. Volkswagen had decided that the North American market would only see the longer wheelbase model. Which came out in 2024 over here.

I think many mistakes were made, in typical VW fashion. Not bringing the smaller and more affordable version over here was mistake number one. Of course, the range of 230 miles was another. And the most obvious blunder is the $60,000 to over $71,000 crazy pricing. They basically stacked everything against it.

I believe some of the changes will increase the battery range to around 300 miles. Which is what it should be. The interior could use a new screen that doesn’t look like the one in all other, much cheaper VW models. They could also throw in a few switches. They also need to bring the 5-seater version over here. As it is, the long wheelbase model is huge. Competing with other minivans like the Toyota Sienna. VW doesn’t seem to understand what they have. The Buzz is not just another Minivan. A new version of the microbus doesn’t have to be a giant van for 7 people. I am sure there is a market for a cheaper, smaller, and even cuter 5-seat version over here. The shorter one is still roomy enough for camping trips.

The price needs to be revised ASAP. By at least $10,000. This is just what Hyundai did with the Ioniq 5. Which was already selling very well.

$10,000 and a smaller version starting in the low to mid-$40,000 range will make the Buzz much more popular in the US.

The ID.B Buzz is a very special vehicle that deserves a better shot in the US. Especially after years and years of waiting for it…

  1. You hit the nail on the head. Too large, too little range, should have been a EREV for the American market or at least a hybrid. Jeepers, I drove over 400 miles yesterday alone. Try that in an ID Buzz with Aunt Fanny, a kid and the family dog. No thank you. And all the ID’s use that swedish interior design just looks cheap, too cutesie, and definitely not expensive for the price.
