What if Lincoln pulled a Jaguar for its next design language…

Let’s face it, Lincoln is pretty much in a design rut these days. It seems all their SUVS look the same and have been for a while now. The lack of any sedan offering in North America doesn’t help either. As it seems easer to make a sedan design stand out than a giant brick shaped vehicle on wheel.

On the other side of the Atlantic, we hear rumors (recently denied by Jaguar) that Jaguar designer Gerry McGovern had been fired. Mr. Mc Govern is responsible for the polarizing new Type 00 Concept that previews the brand’s upcoming all-new EV sedan. While the design is still quite shocking, it has been growing on me, and the final production car will, of course, look quite different and not as unsettling.

Journalists have recently driven prototypes of the car, and most reviews have been pretty stellar so far.

But what if Gerry Mc Govern was really looking for a job? And what if he went to Lincoln? To shake things up a bit. Which is desperately needed.

It seems the old luxury brand doesn’t have much to lose, with just around 104,000 units sold last year. That’s for the whole brand! A Mc Govern shake-up could maybe put Ford’s luxury brand back on the map. The long hood/narrow window recipe could be applied to a sedan and a coupe while using a few retro Lincoln design cues.

The illustration above shows what a new Lincoln Continental sedan and Coupe could look like after such a major shake-up.

Luxurious, different, and not for everyone. But impressive and standing out. I really think Lincoln could do worse…

  1. Nope. I hate the flat blocky look. It reminds me of the flat look in interface design. It was trendy ten years ago but it showed lack of creativity or design sense, unless you are really really skilled. Problem was, cost conscious engineers or programmers, that didn’t think they needed a designer, were the ones designing with it. It was functional but lacked a sense of wonder and elegance. Bring back tactile flowing lines and brilliant details that accentuate the theme. As electric power becomes more of a standard and battery technology improves, why not give us less slabs of rounded stone or worn bars of soap, and more works of art?

  2. Vince, Gerry created several Lincoln concepts in his tenure at Ford, among them the 2002 Continental concept, which I *think* you like quite a bit.

  3. He actually was at Lincoln in the early 00s and designed some concepts! It would be interesting to see him back

  4. Not interested in this design direction at all. Give me a slightly taller more cab-forward sedan that looks sculpted by the wind.
