Should Volvo replace the S60 sedan with a new ES60?

Volvo ended production of the 3rd generation S60 sedan last year after 6 years, with no replacement in sight. That means the brand is no longer offering a sedan in North America.

While the S90 has also been canceled, a revised version of Volvo’s larger sedan has been on sale in China.

Its real replacement is the all-new ES90 EV sedan. A rather bloated higher sedan that tries very hard to be a cross between a sedan and a “Coupe” SUV. With odd results. The EX90 came out in March 2025. So far, the EX90 is only built in China, which means zero chances of making it over here. However, production of the European model has already started.

With the demise of the S60, Volvo doesn’t have a mid-sized sedan anymore. Of course, its “all EV” lineup is being revised a bit. Most recently, with the addition of the new XC70 PHEV, which is also supposed to be coming to Europe and maybe even to North America, since Volvo is scheduled to add a new model to their US factory. And what could be better these days than a mid-sized PHEV SUV with a whopping 125 miles of EV range in the Chinese test cycle (Which could still mean almost 100 miles EPA)

These are all expensive models. So far, Volvo’s cheaper car is the new EX30, starting at around $40,000. The new ES90 sedan is based on the same platform as the EX90 EV SUV. Why not a smaller, much more affordable sedan based on the EX30, for around the same price? Since its platform is also used for other Geely models like the Zeekr X, the Lyink & Co Z20, and the Smalrt #1 and 001 sedan.

Over here, it would not have much competition, especially since Hyundai is rumored to cancel the Ioniq 6 for 2026. But in Europe, it could go against the VW ID.7, upcoming Audi A4 E-tron, Mercedes CLA EV, BMW’s Neue Klasse sedan, and others.

The best part would be if Volvo could find it in its heart to even offer a sporty wagon version later…
