Nissan Wave retro EV for 2027.

If we are to believe the British magazine Autocar, Nissan is working on its own version of the new Renault Twingo EV. While the Twingo is a very modern interpretation of the first generation from decades ago, it seems Nissan is looking into the good old Nissan Pao as an inspiration.

The Pao was part of a series of 4 really cool small cars with retro designs produced by Nissan between 1980 and 1991. The series was called “Pike cars” and included the S-Cargo small van, the Be-1 hatchback and the Figaro retro convertible. The Pao was a 2 door retro hatchback mostly inspired by the Renault 4.

Nissan already has a new model based on a Renault EV with the new Micra which is based on the Renault 5. As you can see from the images above, Nissan did a decent job making sure the Micra didn’t look like the Renault model, although proportions are of course very similar.

It seems that a retro futuristic version of the Pao would have to be quite different from the new Twingo, which has a very modern shape.

The new Wave will be built next to the Twingo starting next year. Which probably mean both cars might, unfortunatelly will look quite similar. However, a really retro design would be quite something. (The illustration above shows what a new Wave EV could look like)

  1. Love that little car. It would be great the size of a Kia Soul and with a hybrid drivetrain.

  2. honestly, from my perspective, they already had great designs. All they have to do is re-create the Figaro and S-Cargo on their electric foundation and just make them 120% size.. I’ve seen the Figaro and it’s absolutely tiny!
Don’t change anything in the design, leave it clean as is. no crazy angles, folds, weir rocker panel trim. Leave everything as is but modernize the internals.
